Default Another mechanic's opinion, no need for engine rebuild!!!

Today I took my 964 to another shop, a smaller one Full of 911s from different eras, The owner listen carefully to The engine and diagnosed, this engine needs a valve adjustement, but I don't hear any strange noises.
I am lost to what to think...

Is this the shop you mentioned yesterday, with the sole proprietor?

Based on what you said before and the fact that he is recommending a much less expensive service tends to make me think he may be right. I suspect that many rebuilds of these cars are unnessary. If he is experienced and you trust him then I would take his advice. You can still do a rebuilt later if needed.

Thanks James!! I think you are right, I will take my 964 in a few weeks so he can listen to my engine cold, even if in the engine needs a rebuild, I will prefer to do it with this guy, I somehow lost confidence in The other shop

What was the suspected reason the original shop suggested a rebuild? What needed to be fixed/replaced?

Try to see if an oil analysis highlights any red flags on the engine's internals.

That's great news Henry. I agree with James. Try the valve adjustment first before committing to a full rebuild.

....agreed, there are a lot of wierd noises coming from a cold engine, especially valves.

Sleep easy for the next few weeks and just get those valves adjusted.

There are a lot of nosies when you first start one up, and if you think you hear something you are sometimes even more keen to hear something that's not really there.

Could be, but why jump to worst case and rebuild the engine when it could be just a valve adjust, on which you can learn a few things: any broken studs, anything in valve train that doesn't feel right, etc.

Ask this new guy to do the leak down and the oil test .
The oil test will tell if there is something going south .

Yes Indy I will ask this guy for a Full analysis of my Car, but I will also have to wait, I counted not less than 10 911s in his shop, waiting for service.
I knew this guy from the years he worked as a motorist in The official service, but I was afraid to go to his shop because it was located in a not so good neibourghood but luckily he moved to another - safer - place.
The other guys have a bigger shop and are better located, but I see now they are not reliable.

Would it be a problem for you to send a small amount of used oil out of your country ?
If you were to send it out very soon , you might get the report back before your car goes into the shop .

Not always the case.

Some people are good at collecting customers others are good at fixing the cars.

Sounds promising Henry! One thing to be aware of is worn valve guides. Common on these engines and the sound is the same as valves that need adjustment. It is not a problem unless ware & oil consumption is getting VERY high. Your new shop sound like they have plenty of experience & will soon diagnose anything problematic.
