Locking rear diff on C4 -understeer

I think when i wrote off my silber C4 a couple years ago 
it could have been a factor of at the limit understeer from diff lock which then turned into classic oversteer when i not so gently applied the brakes 
.
Either that or i had a tire blow out as my dad speculates. (the left rear tire was shredded and shouldn't have been from "just" a 180 at 60 mph).
