Default Air-con Lines

I'm thinking about fitting AC to my car. I spoke to a specialist and he advised that the original lines run through the bodywork and its not possible to replicate the way the factory did it. Anyone know if this is true?

Could an alternative method be to run hard lines the way that the oil lines are run on the right side, down the left side?

Cheers,
Amrik.

That is the way the factory did it. down the left hand side along the rocker panel.

Have you dropped the rocker panel and checked if your car has actually had the hard line deleted by whoever originally removed the A/C?

So that means I can go for a factory style install.

The car never had it.

No, it can be done.

The air con lines leave then engine bay via a hole in the bodywork high in the rear of the left rear wheelwell. With no factory air con, the hole is blocked with a small plate and gasket. Swap that for the air con plate version (with a hole in the middle and different gasket) and you are good - see PET in the bodywork section near the end for p/n's.

The lines then run over the charcoal filter and along the left rocker panel - the factory tabs for brackets should be there and the brackets are listed in PET and still available too.

The line then join the drier in the rear of the left front wheelwell and enter under the windshield by another factory bodywork hole (again, no air con versus air con cover plates and gaskets still available and in PET). The other lines loop over the left front wheel and to the air con blower in the left front wing behind the bumper where bolt on tabs etc. should be present.

Very do-able and not too hard plus all the required brackets etc. are still available - I used some of these bits to put in my water lines as they ran where the air con lines used to run.

The crap that comes out of some mechanics' mouths is truly unbelievable.

I have some pipework that came off my car if you're interested. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you some pics.

Cheers,

Talat

I have done this same project on my "winter driver", a 1991 Toyota 4Runner that we bought new but without air conditioning option. Researched the details and ordered all of the parts from a dismantler. Rule of thumb is, any subsystem that is available as an option can likely be installed after the fact by someone who has the desire.

Having done some work on the AC in my '90 964 I would say the most challenging bit will be installing the various components into the cramped quarters behind the dashboard. This will require a lot of disassembly along with significant patience!

Good luck!

Jim
