Carpet Install - Glue Sequence

Carpet Install - Glue Sequence
After having just finished a complete carpet install, here is the glue sequence that has worked for me. With some of the carpet overlaps and finished vs unfinished borders, install in the right sequence is obviously important. So here it is:
- Over rear wheels left and right (1a and 1b)
- Along door to front left and right (2a and 2b)
- Front center. Cut in half and install either side separately (3)
- Front floor left and right. These do NOT glue in (4a and 4b)
- Back center. This is the hardest part if you changed sound insulation (5)
- Back behind rear seats (6)
- Lower back seat to floor left and right (7a and 7b)
- Rear floor (8a and 8b)
The remaining pieces are not sequence critical
- Door pockets left and right (9a and 9b)
- Small panel driver's side (10)
- Pedal cluster not glued (11)
- Small piece front center console. These are actually 2 small pieces (12)
- Small panel passenger side (13)
There are three pieces in the diagram that do not apply to a C2 Targa (n/a)
A couple of lessons learned:
- The original sound insulation is thicker in some places than modern material. That may require some trimming of the new carpet set and impact fit.
- I used the old pieces to cut holes where needed for seat belt bolts etc.
- It is easy to loose track of holes and they are hard to find once glued over
Overall a time consuming project but not hard if you work methodically and think ahead. Hope this helps.

After a couple of false starts I got a carpet set from AppBiz. Bob was fantastic to work with. He ended up sending me a set for a '91 Cab since he did not have a Targa set in stock. The pieces fit almost perfectly and trimming was limited to cutting holes for seat belts, etc. The only pieces that needed some work were the two for the center console. You need to cut the front piece in half - just fold in the middle and cut with a blade. The second piece in the rear between the two seats needed a little work because I had removed the original sound deadening material. Porsche is using some molded foam in places to "hide" wires. This makes the foam thicker than aftermarket materials, hence the need to adjust. Here is my materials list:
- Carpet set from AppBiz, black, '91 Targa
- Damplifier Pro form Second Skin Audio
- Heatwave from Second Skin Audio for rear fire wall and around rear seats
- Overkill from Second Skin Audio for all other areas
- Mass Loaded Vinyl for rear firewall area
- V&S 1081 - Spray Trim Adhesive (Ok but not great) and Wurth Hi-Temp Spray Adhesive (fantastic stuff)
Here is a background article for sound deadening:

I also redid the vinyl covers for the rear panels and redid the rear seats with new vinyl.
