why so many engine rebuilds?

My thoughts too. Over here they were the cheapest 911 you could buy 5 to 10 years ago. The result being that some folk could buy them but perhaps not afford to properly maintain them. In the last 5 years we have seen the popularity of the 964 escalate and enthusiasts are now buying them and spending money on getting them back into great shape.

denial....
Money
Alot of owners just didn't take care of them. Probably not so much first owners but second and third owners got in over their heads.
There is no real reason with proper care and maint. that a 3.6 would need a major overhall before 200K or more.
I have come across more than one 911 owner who thinks is a Toyota: doesn't warm it up all the way, short trips it, foregoes proper maint, putt-putts around, so-on and so-forth.

These engines are no less durable than their predecessors and with proper maintenance using good oil, will last well beyond 150K (aside from valve guides). For the folks who followed the Factory oil change regimen, not so much.
In short, its human factors more than mechanical issues.

Just refilled with Brad Penn last night. My son dripped less than me! He thought "green" color was awesome.
Off to the track tomorrow!

Thanks Bmohr.
He came into the garage at a perfect time...just installed the drain plugs and was filling the oil tank with the first quart. He poured the next 5. I didn't want him around the spinning fan so, I took over after that and he started the engine. His first time...that got the biggest grin of the night.
You know the feeling..turning the key and feeling that big lump come to life.
I smiled back at him and started thinking about hiding the key soon (he's 9).

I have a 5 year old that has been riding in my 911's since day one...he helps me with the 964 all the time...great photo opportunity and priceless! I'm hoping that by the time he is ready to take to the streets, he will have a great understanding of how special these cars are and drive accordingly... Cheers!

911jetta...my last comment was for you! Btw...to address this thread...my '94 C2 has 129,000 miles on her and she doesn't puff any smoke nor drops oil and runs out beautifully! I am lucky to have found a good one! With that said...I still always drive with my fingers crossed since I am the third owner!

Working on the car, even just turning a couple screws, really forms a bond...with the car and everyone who is helping.
The kids love it, my wife...she just stays away and asks if the AC is working before she gets in.
