Default Do you think of the 964 as an 80’s car or a 90’s car?

Do you think of the 964 as an 80’s car or a 90’s car?

Sure they were released in the early 90’s, and obviously engineered and developed in the 80’s (and/or redeveloped since the 60’s), but do you think of the 964 as an 80’s car? Porsche does in this recently released video from Moscow.

I’m glad Porsche included such a nice looking 964, but they really should have added an impact bumper car and called that 80’s. We know Porsche loves to throw around model designations, GTS, R, etc., but now it feels comfortable moving decades around too…beautiful “60’s’ red Longhood by the way.

I normally don’t like to be a critic because at the end of the day I’m just happy to see videos of these wonderful car. I love the car as art theme, and there are some cute scenes of people interacting with the cars. Just a few too many “lux” logos for me… AND why does the Panamera need to in what is obviously a 911 display?

Nice 964 example though! The 80’s never looked so good!

Defo '90s not '80s.

For me, '80s is a stock broker red SC with a whale tale. Think Wall Street or American Psycho.

964s are Bad Boys. As an aside (and partial highjack) did anyone ever put a 993 in a movie?

Yeah I would agree. The 964 is the best of the 80s Porsches. It was released originally in 1989, and carries over the old shell and interior. I would say the 993 is the first or earliest 90s car, which was in development when the 964 was being sold new.

So they got it right.

Their numbering makes no sense-

996.2 is not a 90s car
997.2 came out in 2009... so not really a '00s car...

sure it does it is pretty sequencial in terms of development.

The only reason there is big jumps in numbers on the commercial side around the 964 is there as a bunch of race cars built and then a whole new street car development, but just about everything can be accounted for.

With the release of the 991, a Porsche development engineer was asked what the importance of 991 was? He said it's a random number they chose to throw off other manufactures (and parts suppliers) during the early development of the new car.

Regardless, I don't want to get sucked into the Porsche code game and I don't think it answers the question of the 964 being an '80/'90s car? At least in terms of technology and the public's perception.

The 911 saw a lot of change in the '90s: 964, 993 and 996.
There just happens to be too many different '90s 911s to tell a clear story here.

I see too much '90s technology in the 964 to call it an 80's car. Look at how much of the 964 was carried over (for YEARS) into the 993. That said, I know where the 964 came from also...
Didn't Porsche quote only 15% new parts for the 993. Kinda confirms the 964 as a '90s car.

All this makes a good story in a Russian mall though...

If I could have picked the line up...
'60s: show an early car with steel wheels, obviously without flares.
'70s: then a funky colored 70's longhood.
'80s: impact bumper with wing (Turbo please!)
'90s: 993 with it's flowing fenders
'00: 997 (or maybe a flowing 996)
Today: 991

And get rid of the Panamera!

I think they just needed to space it out. Having three cars in the 90s devalues the whole evolution vs. revolution concept.

Edit:
Jetta beat me to it:

I see it as the last of the true 911 series. I've always viewed them as early 90's. Can't call a car with ABS and airbags an 80's car

There was that movie about drug reps selling Viagra that had a 993 in it.

Sure you can. Porsche introduced ABS on the 928 in 1984, and ABS and airbags on the 944 Turbo for 1987.

I think of the 964 as somewhere betwixt & between.
