I have a set of Porsche OEM Sport Classic II made by BBS in 17" available (they look like this). I replaced them with Cup 1s because I was looking for a more traditional look that was a bit easier to clean. Having said that the SCIIs look great on a 964.

From what I understand, 18" wheels became standard around 1996 at which time Porsche started to install a steering brace on the steering rack due to more stress being exerted on the steering rack from the extra weight of 18" wheels, or something like that. Cars previous to 1996 don't have a brace at all but it is cheap insurance to install the brace when upgrading to 18" wheels.

I just found a set of 17" Cup 1s for ~$550 with PS2s that have about 2/3 tread left on them. There were a couple caveats: they need to be refinished (~$240), the fronts have a 65offset. That offset will require 15mm spacers and new wheel studs. I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

That is a very good question since the tech bulletin states the potential for wheel carrier failure as well as front strut mounts and the body area of the rear suspension. It's very hard to understand how on a 964 a steering rack brace can prevent any of these stresses that happen away from the rack????? Not saying it will not prevent it but I do not see a direct cause and effect.
Anyone know the real story with 18s on a 964?

Sweet deal on those. Do they take the stock center cap?

I actually don't know as I bought them from the TireRack as well... I'm sure someone can tell you or I can measure the diameter later on.

I know 911Jetta has a bunch of pictures of these on his car - will give you different angles etc.

Hi Mike,

Here's some "before and after" pics of mine recently fitted with Veloce RS Speedline's fitted with Continental Porsche N2 rated tyres so you can compare the difference between these and the Design 90's (which I never liked even when they first came out).

The sizes are 6J x 18" with 225/40ZR18 Contisports on the front and the rears are 9.5J x 18 265/35ZR18 Contisports on the rears.

The new centre caps are genuine Porsche (997).

The car was then subject to a full laser geometry set-up after lowering the suspension a tad (1 link cut off each coil).

There is no rubbing on either arch or any "bottoming out". She feels as tight as a drum with a good turn in.

Cheers,
Paul
