964 Speedster Engine Cutting out and Hall Sensor Problem - Solved
For the purpose of sharing this time and not seeking help.
As you may have seen from previous threads I have just purchased a 1994 964 Strosek Speedster and as I had developed an issue with Tire rub and it is new to me I wanted the car to get a complete once over. This involved a Bilstein height adjustment, subsequent alignment and corner balance to fix this issue.
I wanted to get a valve adjustment as I did not know when it was last done, one or two rubber boots were replaced, a leak down test was completed (all less than 2%) - and a system adaption. New plugs and leads were fitted just 2000 miles ago.
During its "Spirited Drive" by the mechanic the car simply cut out and and would not start until 10 minutes of sitting still. Funnily enough this happened to me on the way to the mechanic and on my very first drive in the car a couple of weeks before. The PO had told me that the car was a very difficult starter and often times it would kill the battery trying to start it - he would fit a new battery and it would start again. When I reviewed the invoices and paperwork from the last three PO's this issue had occurred a number of times for each owner - with a number of Tow Fees and various diagnostics from Porsche Dealerships.
Two new DME's have been fitted in the last 8000 miles and number of other repairs like a new set of Dizzy caps and Rotors and new leads - as well as 4 new batteries - after this event had occurred. I am not very impressed with the Porsche dealer competencies that did all of this work.
The mechanic I took it to is a well known and respected Porsche specialist and even before this engine cut out his diagnostic kept showing a Hall Sensor error coming on some time after a system reset but not immediately. The problem was that we had to get the unit on the car when the engine had cut out so we could have a better analysis of the situation. Of course in the interim the normal Hall Sensor issues of badly connecting leads and the plug to the Distributor were checked including cutting back the rubber boot.
Well eventually the engine cut out problem did reoccur - the car cut out on a drive - and this time we got a diagnostic unit on it while the engine was not starting. It turns out it was an intermittent broken power lead connector to the distributor. This lead was recrimped and the problems so far have not reappeared after a 100 miles on the car. And boy - does this car drive - I just love this thing, the sheer thrill of driving this is unmatched by the many high end cars I have owned - really looking forward to the summer days
I wanted to share this as I now how useful other folks diagnostic and root cause analysis have helped me understand what to look for.
I really was going to load more pics of the Speedster today but got carried away with another new addition to the family this week - a Black on Black Panamera 4S - some more fun ahead Pictures to follow soon of the whole family but in respect to this forum mainly the Speedster.

I have been getting a Hall sensor error on scantool for a few years. Think i will check all the wires around the distributor. Doesnt seem to affect the cars running.
