Default Oil Pressure Gauge - What's the correct behaviour?

Hi is it normal for the oil pressure gauge to fluctuate? Or is this an issue? Dogdy gauge or worse!?

My first 964 and was told by the seller it was normal?

Just checking, thanks.

Perfectly normal. It almost reflects movements of the tacho.

When it doesn't move you should be concerned.

On a healthy engine, at idle you'll see a steady 2-3bar when cold, 1-2bar when hot. By about 2000-3000 the needle should pin at 5 bar. If you are seeing quick up and down movements of the needle, you may need a new sensor.

Actually, that is not true. That may be safe, but it is not normal. The oil pump will produce 5bar of pressure between 2-3000rpm. At that point the pressure relief valve in the case bleeds off any excessive pressure. If you are seeing only 4 bar at 4000rpm, then you have to wonder why it is so low. Do you have worn bearings, did an oil squirter come out, are the pump gears Ok.

+1

In addition, I found that with aftermarket gauges the needle bounced around (especially on idle). When I replaced it with an original item purchased from Porsche, the needle was rock steady.

The pic below shows two aftermarket gauges on the left and the Porsche original on the right:
