This comes from a 6 speed car, so you need to swap the black cap on your shift **** with the silver six speed cap that comes with this one. I found a new 5 speed cap and used that.
Weight difference is huge -the standard one is very light. Cost was sub 300 dollars- i dont know the total. Ordered everything from Sunset. Careful with the last letters on the **** part# - those are the color code. I changed it myself yes, very easy to do. 15 mins. 5 mins if you have done it before. I hadnt so I took my time...
Mark - for what you are putting together with your car, I'm not sure which **** would be better. The standard **** is slightly smaller, and you will be wearing driving gloves, so the size may be better small. Plus, the smaller **** fits on with a molded rubber housing that is very tight to the shaft, so there is very very little movement between the **** and shaft and a less dampened touch - ie, you feel more through the **** with the smaller one. The larger **** touches the shaft only in two points, as there are two soft rubber bushings that is rests on - one at the top and one at the base of the metal insert. Those soft bushings are nice for the street, makes every clank, a clunk, if that makes sense. but there is some give and movement when shifting. So before spending the money, I would try to get ahold of someone with a 993 TT or someone that has dont this upgrade and try it out first hand...I could probably explain better if I werent writing...
However - for street use - I am more than happy with it. Hope any of that helps...
Goughary: Thanx for info! P.S., which method did you use to rem. old & insl. new? i.e., lever the metal retaining rectangular ring (of the leather boot) out from above, with a fairly wide thin nosed screwdriver, or remove the whole console frame and remove it from below. I'm going to do this in future, but am a bit spooked about BREAKING the 2 retaining clips away (off) from the under side of the "vulnerable" plastic console frame to which they (the 2 clips) are attached. P.S., which side (L or R) side are the retaining clips on, and how far away from the corners, in your estimation? Mucho thanx!
screw driver under the lip on the left side - lever down carefully - I stuck the screw driver between two credit cards to keep it from hurting the console or the leather. Easy enough - once it starts to move it pops right off. then wiggle it out and then the tricky part is you gotta work to pull off the old ****. the rubber just doesnt want to le go. But eventually it worked itself up and off...Hope that makes sense...
