From my readings around the subject, I don't think the silver ones are necessarily junk, it's just that they seem to have a higher failure rate than the originals. So, if for argument's sake the black coils had a premature failure rate of 1-in-100, and the silvers have a premature failure rate of 5-in-100, you've still got a good chance of ending up with a good one. Don't forget that internet opinions skew towards the unhappy minority, but you're prob not hearing about hundreds of customers who have replaced their black coils with the silver ones without any issues.

When replacing an ignition coil, use a replacement coil which has the overall
electrical characteristics as the original one, i.e. primary resistance, primary
inductance, and turns ratio. A number of commonly available coils with their
characteristics are presented here under 'Typical Ignition Coil Values';

I have the silver coils as well. Twelve plus months and no issues.

It makes me wonder if they had a bad batch because all of the recent feedback on the silver coils has been good.

I've seen this question asked in a few past threads but not really answered - are the Super Blues suitable for use in the 964 - as far as reliability and performance?

I ask because I need to order some new ones, and the silvers run about $60 vs. $38 for the super blues. (If anybody's seen them cheaper, can you toss in a link? - thanks)

i tried and failed.

just my opinion but dont waste your time trying to find the black.

the silver are fine.

i think the problems with the silvers is now a myth .... just like the other myth that you don't need to a bosch hammer for a system adaptation and a spirited drive is sufficient. it is a myth so go get a bosch hammer adaptation.

(I've got two NOS black coils; saving them for a rainy day. They do come up on eBay from time-to-time. )
