It is the style of fitting a smaller width tire to achieve a stretched look.
I believe it is part of the "stance" fashion. My lack of understanding my be due to my age.

Stock rims are 6 & 8. If I stay with 16" what does going 7 & 8 do for me? I have read how changing sizes (O.D.) can have affect on 964. Any changes with width? I see a number of 17" and 18" posts, and many going to 7 & 9. I plan to stick with 16's at least that is current plan.

For the same tire, a wider rim will have the tire sit wider on the rim, meaning it will deform less under lateral stress, being "better seated". Ergo better performance in theory.
This is valid up to the point where it gets ridiculous, à la stretched tire fashion. That fashion btw will never pass any official tech inspection in my place. Ever.

The lack of availablity of 16 sizes is one of the factors causing the move to larger dia wheels. Porsche recommends against 18's on the 964. If you can find a tire you like in 16, go with it.

My C2 came with 17" CUP wheels on. So the Fuchs 17 were a logical choice. Size was recommended by a Porsche mechanic

Here is a photo of my car with recently installed 17" Fuchs. I am very pleased with how they look and drive. I will probably install OE Porsche center caps, however.

Looking good. Just need some more light in the pic so we can see the detail

Put my old wheels on so I can get my regular certification done with road tyres. Proof to me how much the Fuchs enhance the 964.

Fuchs are lovely, but I actually think those D90 looking things look pretty nice as well!

I'm hoping they look better with painted centres. Right now I'm not feeling the love. I think basic D90s would be more honest.

I've been wondering the same re the d90's ... There something right about em..
But they just fall short somehow ... Is it cos they centre's look plasticky (because80s)?
Like those split rims over plain tho.
