Default Just found a nice oil change consideration...

Over the past few days I was doing some looking around while planning an oil change which I just completed. While at the local auto store I stumbled across Valvolines R1 50wt racing oil with ZDDP. Bought 12 qts which saved me quite a few bucks considering it was only 6.25 a qt vs Mobil's 10.20 a qt! Definitely a money saver AND the Valvoline has a higher zinc content. 1400ppm vs 1300.

Aaaaanyway, just figured I'd give everyone some nice info I found. Now, off for a Sunday drive around the island!

While I'm sure prices are higher on the islands, you can't beat Autozone's March sale on the stuff.

@B.E - you use straight 50w? That oil is $6.49/qt. here on Kauai.

I run Valvoline VR1 20W-50 for the same reason. Some time back in 2005ish GL5 came out and basically said to drop ZDDP levels so the synthetics don't have as much as they once did.

That's what I'm running and it's been great. Chose it for the same reason.

Yeah, straight 50w. When I was building v8 engines I always used heavier straight-weight oils because of the nice oil pressure bump and increased shear resistance. Never really liked the idea of extremely wide viscosity oils because of all the extra polymers they pack-in to make the wider range... affecting the mechanical shear resistance.

With me finding myself constantly caught in traffic with the needle hitting the 230deg mark along with Hawaii never seeing temps below 65, I decided to revert back to my old ways; straight 50.
