that's the blow-off valve from the turbo, when you lift the throttle and the throttle body closes the pressurized air goes out thru the blow off, so you don't slow down the turbo or add over pressure in the intake side.

It's about the first 4wd Porsche vs the current. In the 964 it's mainly a safety item. The 991 doesn't really need one. Overall conclusion is that the 991 is safer and the better car but that the 964 is a lot more exciting.

On a side note, I loved the advertising slogan that was quoted for the 964: "You can leave later after breakfast and you'll be back home earlier for dinner; can you think of a better family car?"
