Default Carbon Buildup?

Hey Guys....

Got a question on 964s not driven hard...car runs good but wondering about the concept that some people on the forum say that these engines need to be redlined to keep them running strong...

My RSA has 60K miles....3k miles driven over a three year period )2008 to 2011)...I've put on 7K since last March when I bought it....

Noticed the car ran better after my Dyno'd a few weeks back...a little smoother...been thinking I'm not driving it hard enough...perhaps I need to drive in harder to burn the carbon out.

Typically I drive in the 3000-4500RPM...seldom go in the 5 to 6K range...been driving highway speeds for 30 miles (60 miles total) to from work....one to two times a week...engine is a hummer

Do these engines carbon up if they're not driven hard?

Any cleaner that's good to put in the gas tank?

Thoughts? BTW, car goes in on the 13th of Feb for the enhancement noted in my signature block...

Hi Phil,

They do, yes. Its mainly due to the chemistry of unleaded fuels, however its exacerbated by the ease and excellent drivability at low RPM's.

There are many products used for keeping the injectors and intake valves clean, but we've had the most success using a combination of LubroMoly Ventil Sauber & Jectron.

Hope this helps,

That sounds like very soft duty. Spin the motor. Floor the throttle. Let it do what it was designed and built to do.

I've used 44k for years on multiple vehicles with great results - I highly recommend it and use it on all of my cars every 6 months or so. Getting a hold of it is a problem sometimes, but I've found a local dealer that will sell it over the counter to me (many won't, I think it may technically be against their retail agreement).

BTW, excellent choice in cars

My new C2 Tiptronic definitely needs an Italian tune-up. PPI shop recommended same thing and suspected carbon build up on valves due to good compression numbers but leakage in the high but still acceptable range for such a low mileage car. Steve at Rennsport already set me up with a few cans of LubroMoly Ventil Sauber & Jectron.

Any engine driven frequently for short periods at low RPM's will develop excessive carbon buildup. Primarily due to the engine not reaching full operating temp. As long as you occasionally run it to redline at WOT while at operating temp, it'll help keep the buildup to a minimum.

If Steve says so, then that's what I'll order. When's the best time to use this type of product...anytime, or just before an oil change (because of the chemicals involved)?

After my engine warms up, I definitely see 6,500+ quite often (in 2nd gear around normal traffic). Turning onto a highway ramp sees me spinning all the way through the first three gears...then a brake tap to slow and safely merge with traffic.

Plus, the 964 with an exhaust bypass and a drilled airbox makes the most fantastic noise during full throttle at 6K. All of a sudden it gets extra loud and a NEW layer of induction noise kicks-in (in the cabin). Something like a screaming BAAAAHHH! I've also removed the ugly engine sound pad...

Heard it a couple times last night and laughed every time it happened. It's a crazy awesome noise.

Is LubroMoly Ventil Sauber & Jectron similar to Techron?

You're quite welcome,...

The only such products I've used are Techron and the LubroMoly "twins" and IMHO, the LubroMoly pair worked faster.

For that reason, those two products are what we use, recommend, and sell.

Thanks for sharing your build with us. I can't wait to read about your future track events with that monster.

Steve:

I've been reading another post in rennlist about Ventil Sauber & Jectron. Some of them talk about using them before flushing the oil. Do you really need to change the oil after using these products?

Thanks,

Milutintin, I wouldn't change the oil afterwards...just continue on and change it at the normal interval.
