Default OK, need to drop oil before removing valve covers?

Going to get around to putting on my replacement lower valve covers soon. The car has 500 miles on her oil and 2k miles since last valve adjust, so I was planning on a straight valve cover swap only, a quick in-and-out job. The original covers are crumbling away..

I was browsing a couple of posts and adrian's book regarding valve adjustment and they always specify dropping the oil first. I dont do this when I do the 356 valves, is there something different about the 964? (OK, I know there are lots of differences - but you know what I mean..!)

Ta..

I once tried that on the Carrera 3... Tilt the car one way and I was sure it wouldn't cause a mess.

Well, I was wrong

Ended up buttoning everything up again and draining the oil.

Maybe someone else has a technique, but minde def didn't work.

It's enough to drain the oli in the engine if you want to save time. Or you could actually tilt the car sideways by just using jack stands on one side, then you can do it with the enginge oil left, but that it's a kind of "field method". But I would recommend draining the oil.

OK, thanks both..this must be a 911 thing.
Maybe I should wait until the next service, its a shame to drop such new oil. (But my new covers are so shiny!)
...I think I need to be more organised in my service and maintenance planning

If you use a clean bucket for the oil you can of course re-use it. You don't have to buy new oil.

If the valve covers are crumbling, wouldn't you want to spend the extra "pennies" to replace the oil and filter at the same time? I would want to make sure nothing "crumbled to the inside" and got left in the oil/filter?

Oh, sorry about the oilfield upbringing in me showing through, and not being on the wacko end of the green spectrum. (Please note that I did NOT say that everyone who believes in the green movement is wacko!)

I didn't find it necessary to drop the oil. I jacked the car up one side at a time when I did them:

Oil spillage was minimal.

My car was perfectly level with the rear in the air while pulling them, and no more than 1/2qt leaked out total. The constant drip was a bit annoying though.

Have you checked your uppers as well? When I pulled mine the paint on the inside was starting to crumble and had a few pretty bad oxidization spots. Looks like little volcano's erupting. Decided to go ahead and swap out all the covers for a CNC'd set.

Don't forget that with new O-ring style gaskets, on the new lower covers, you won't need much torque at all... 7 ft-lbs... which is only wrist tight with a shorty 1/4" drive. You may already know this but it's an oft-overlooked detail.

Driver side is not so bad but on the pass side it collects on the heat exchanger and then smokes for a while after starting it up.

I anticipated that and stuffed a couple of shop towels on top of the heat exchanger. Got most of it. Haven't started it up yet though!

OK, thanks for the tips. I know its only going to be 20 quids worth of oil but thats not the point - I hate wasting things! My garage had said at the last valve job the uppers looked in good shape but the lowers were not good at all, this job has been a long time coming..

(Tom, do you still have valve adjust screwdrivers for sale?)

So, I'll jack her up at an angle and report back - I'm going to aim for this kind of slope, just make sure I dont lose any drops..
