Default Chlorinated Brake Cleaner: Danger...

Found this on the 993 Forum...

Probably a good time to spot-check your cleaners and other shop chemicals. Putting compounds together accidentally, or exposing the wrong ones to heat can be fatal... or worse, debilitating...

Let's be careful out there...

Tom - Thanks for the heads up. I use brake clean all the time but don't have a welder. I will be sure to keep heat away from brake clean.

So, brake cleaner and heat are a bad combination? . . . Don't brakes get hot? Really hot?

Does the brake cleaner evaporate at a fast rate? I'd hate to go on a test drive and inadvertently poison some innocent by stander at the traffic light!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely read more carefully!

difinigan, It is the TCE (Trichloroethene) in the brake cleaner that is toxic with high temp/heat. When using brake cleaner, the TCE will eventually volatilize as it is part of the VOCs family. In the case of the welder in the article, there was TCE residue on the parts where the open torch basically reacted with the potent chlorinated compound. On the other hand if use on your brake caliper to clean dust or grease, the TCE will, overtime, evaporate.

did the article not mention also the the addition of argon to the heat of the welding is what also caused the phosgene gas which is fatal at 4ppm.Anyway you cut it non of this stuff can be healthy for a person and i for one will pay more attention as i have been known to weld after cleaning the surface off with brake clean or varsol. don't i just feel like an idiot now!

And if that's not the only thing wrong with TCE:
