Should a stock 964 be able to hang with 355's?
We did a group drive today and while we didn't seem hammer all that hard, anytime the 355's opened it up, twisties or straights, I was able to stick right with them.
The 964 felt strong, but I "should" be giving up 125hp or so to those things!
Wonder if they're down on power, I'm up on power on I've not lost that much skill since my competitive days?
Anyway, sure felt good to defend the honor over and over.

Was it on a track? Very hard to compare anything on a public road.
At my track, I recall a 355 doing about 1.19 and a stock 964 about 1.28 .... so 9 seconds on a short track .. so the 964 is much slower.
anyway they are both popular cars .. just compare on www.fastestlaps.com

Yesterday I gave a 348 a good run for the money. Equally as quick as the 964. I did a rolling start with him and a standing start... then at the next light, which is followed by a sweeper to the right he said he could not do that or the car would break down at some point (i rolled the window at the light and spoke with him).
I just think he was embarassed a 50hp less car was just as quick.

Btw ... You said stock.
The fastlaps times are unlikely to be stock.
That 964 time of about 1.28 will be about 1.23 with mods.
Similarly the 355 times of 1.19 was stock from memory, so that would drop with some mods.

Yeah - I should not have said "stock" - I'm on H&R Blacks with Bilstiens and new rubber. I've never opened up the ECU - but there's a good chance this car may have been chipped at some point. It's inconsistant - but when it's "on", it feels MUCH faster than any other 964 I've driven.
Anyway - it was a great drive and was a lot of fun to hang tough with these cars rather than be dropped behind - that never happened. It was merely a spirited drive through the country - but even as we accellerated down on ramps to highways etc - I was able to stay right with them - and they sure SOUNDED like they were on the gas! ; )

I'd put it down to a combination of your driving skills (driver skill is always a big factor IMO), the rear engine traction and not being able to take liberties on a public road.
In a similar situation on a brisk cross country Sunday morning drive a friend of mine who'd recently bought a GT3, remarked at the end of the drive how hard he had to work to keep up with me and was quite astonished at how quick the 964 was through the twisty bits.

These cars can hang with some serious competition on curvy mountain roads.
I credit the narrow hips and small size of a C2, a responsive N.A. motor, and the awesome rear weight bias allowing you to rocket out of the turns. Plus, the car feels so strong and solid that it gives you that extra feeling of confidence. It doesn't feel like you are abusing the car, you are just flowing with the road.
I was completely surprised the first time I went on a mountain group run. I found myself behind a Noble and in front of a whole bunch of old-school, mega-boosted 911 Turbos. I thought I'd have to wave them by, but my eyes were opened after the first couple of miles. I hated following the Noble, the car is too wide for curvy mountain roads. I cringed every time he crossed the yellow line...which was almost every turn.
964s can also give motos a good run for their money in the twisties. I think these guys were really surprised. They were behind me for miles and only passed when I slowed down as we drove through a small town. They rocketed passed, but I quickly caught back up after we were back in the boonies.
It's just a fricking amazing car for $20,000!!!!!! The real deal.

As much as I like my 964, I really dont think the stock performance is great.
An off the shelf Subaru WRX will be about 5 secs per lap quicker .... sure there is 20yrs of age difference.
You may recall my first track day ... the stock 964 was 2 secs per lap slower than my mildly modified 924 .. albeit the tyres were terrible on the 964.

The 964 C2 and 348 are pretty tight on paper. I think a 964 / 355 match up would really depend on factors such as tires, driving ability, and whether the Ferrari owner is doing his hair in the rearview.

I've surprised motorcyclists by keeping up with them on the twisties on the nearby HWY 1 in Northern California. They eventually pulled over and gave me the big thumbs up!

WRX's are pretty overestimated ... they are quick, but a 964 in the hands of an expert is hard to catch !
I always compare the 911 with he ME 109, designed in 1933, in the hands of an expert it could still beat P51's and P47's in 1944.
