here you go, & guarantee would make it a blast.....

but seriously seems unless engine has been completely broken down & damage understood hard to understand what your cost/rewards issues are
rebuild against purchase a rebuilt. (but i do love deep down this swap....& considering these cars are getting older....decisions re swaps vs. purism are in order imo).

Just saw this one on flea-bay...

If the story is true (20k miles), it may be a good deal. Plus, you could remove the varioram stuff and sell it off, using your mainfold and such... There are always 964 and 95 993 guys wanting to try the varioram conversion...

based on the description of the failure, I wouldn't be surprised if you broke a rod which put a nice little viewing window into the case.

That said, I'd still take the thing home and part out whatever ancillaries you can..intake, valve covers, cams, etc. You won't make a killing, but it might help to offset.

Hi Howard, I come back to Rennlist and read this! Sorry to read it - sounds like it's not great timing (but congratulations on the reason for that..)

I was thinking if this happened to me, and I wasnt feeling all in for going for an 8-10k rebuild I would think about two options:

1. The low mile stored motor that strega (ex rennlist I'm sure) is selling on ebay. It ended at £1700 with reserve not met, BIN of £2750 - so he would probably take 2500. You could get it shipped in a crate with someone's car going over - and then you could either build it back up yourself with some new seals, or get someone to build it/check it. 30k miles and always turned over, surely it would be fine...?

2. Let her go/part her out and start again. Especially with the prospect of shrapnel in the system

I don't know what shape the rest of the car is in though...but good luck anyway!

Hey, Johnny G, longtime!!!

(btw, I think there was a disconnect...I was pacing 'like' I was expecting a baby. Already gave 3, no more! Although I might have to eBay a couple in addition to a kidney to pay for the 964!)

Dont want to lose the entire car!

Still not talked with my mechanic.

I'd like to just rebuild if possible, although I expect sourcing a new engine is the most cost-effective route.

I hate being without my car already and it's only been a couple of days. I think I'll go insane if I go 964less as long as I did after the C4 bit the dust...

Did you see the 14K craigslist car? You might be able to pull the motor and part that car (or sell it motorless). Just a thought.

This maybe? Doesn't specifically mention a motor being available but...

I'm so sorry to hear your problems bud. I had a similar traumatic experience with my C4 transmission. Do not lose heart, just keep in mind the good experiences you've had and persevere. It will get fixed and when it is you will love it even more, when you regain your trust and forgive..... Good luck with your quest, it will be worth it!
That first ad is for my spare engine, I can do you a deal if you want to sort out shipping.

Hi Marc, thanks so much for the good wishes. Still not really sunk in yet tbh! I really want to rebuild the original motor if at all possible, maybe put a replacement in temporarily and take my time over the rebuild if its financially possible. Still have to figure out all the options. Wish my mechanic would call me back....!

Looking like a replacement, at least for now is going to be the best bet. Mechanic thinks rebuild likely to run into big bucks ($15,000).

Think I'm going to be porscheless for a while....!

Another one...

There is no paper work with the engine but, Jim at Dallas Euro cars assured me that all was well with the engine and it had just been resealed and a new clutch installed. From everything I have seen on this engine I have no reason to doubt that the engine was very well maintained and freshened up not long before I bought it.

Engine info:
Out of a late 1991 C2
142K miles
Engine has no oil leaks like earlier 964 engines, also has the plastic intake.

$5000

I will ensure that the engine is strapped down to the pallet and wrap the entire thing in plastic for shipping. The zip to where the engine is located is 31763 for those wanting to check on freight.

Thanks
Mike
