Default Black Powder in trunk / boot mystery *solved* - Solution?

Hello Gents,
Can anyone tell me what all this black powder is. It seems to be in every nook and cranny of the trunk, underneath the carpet. It comes off easily, but is everywhere. I'm afraid it's fuel lines deteriorating. Thanks....

Why the popcorn Anto?

Nice clean finger Laker; I'm curious also.

I have lots of it. Always assumed it to be from the carpet.

I have it too. Seems to be more concentrated near the top mounts so assumed it's produced by the rubber very slowly perishing with age.

If there is lots of it everywhere I doubt that it's the fuel lines. It would be localised just next to the filler pipe...

Much more likely is the carpet is starting to disintegrate with age. My hands get filthy every time I move the carpet...

Also the carpet rubs against the top mounts so it doesn't suprise me that boxsey911 finds it concentrated around there.

I like that! Gonna have to start using that one. Better than simply subscribing to the thread!

Same as me. I have no carpets and always wondered where that powder came from.

Never considered something as simple as the carpet. Like a parent, you always fear the worst.
I put a clean sheet of paper under the carpet and then tapped and stroked the carpet, and guess what the paper was covered with?
How much do you think the dealer would have charged for that diagnosis?

Haven't wrenched in three weeks, and I did start off by saying "Gents" so I had to be clean (before collecting a sample)
