Replicating the 993 sound with a 964 motor?
Hi everyone,
I love the way my 964 sounds, but I'm also really starting to like how the 993 motor sounds (Don't worry, I'm not planning on getting one!).
Have a listen to this video.. 993 Clubsport
It's clearly had some engine work (probably a more agressive cam etc), but I've yet to hear a 964 motor that sounds similar to this.
Anyway, does anyone know what makes the 993 motor sound the way it does? Is there a muffler that you can fit to a 964 motor that would replicate it? It is the hydraulic lifters, or something else? I guess it's in part to do with having a dual outlet exhaust, but even 964's with dual outlet exhausts still sound different somehow?
Thanks!

I think the 964 is the best sounding standard production 911 even built. Many sources agree...
You really want it to sound like the 993 engine?
In any case, intake, exhaust and cats can make a massive difference. But you will never know exactly what it sounds like until you try it. Sort of like an expensive experiment with no guarantee.
Try to find another 964 that sounds more to your liking and get the same mods.

It's not that I want to make my motor sound like a 993 - I like the way it sounds as it is (no cat and cup bypass) and agree that the 964 is probably the nicest sounding of them all. I'm just curious to know why the 993 sounds so different.

You can get an even lopier idle by using the RS cams on a stock 3.6, that's what I have in my '76 w/ 993 power.

Hi Bill,
Yeah, I'm thinking that perhaps the cam is the thing I'm liking about the sound of that motor. I assume you mean 993 RS cams? Would they go into a 964 motor?

Isn't the 993 exhaust configuration pretty different from the 964? That's probably the main driver in the difference. Something about the crossover being further down the exhaust path and what not, gives the car's rumble a different heartbeat.

I can't imagine trying to replicate the sound of any car while idling.. anyway sounds borla exhaust to me. I agree OEM to OEM 964 sounds better as the newer cars got quieter and quieter..

That is correct...the 1995 993 changed the manifolds and complete system. Just this change was worth 20+hp and accounted for the difference between the 964 and 993; this was before Varioram the following year which added another 10+hp.

Guys the sound comes from 2 things, the 3.8RS motor has cams that have a little lumpier idle and it sounds like that car has stock 993 mufflers w/ a cat bypass. A stock 993 even w/ a bypass would not sound like that.
Those cams or the SS mechanical lifter equivalent cams give an even lumpier idle in a 3.6,

Like Bill said, it's mostly the cam in that car that gives it the radical lumpy sound. It could have also been cold and running rich. My 993 sound a bit lumpy at idle when cold, but when warmed up, I'd take the sound of my old 964 any day. Those mechanical lifters make for some sweet harmonics.
