Default ADVISE: V FAST ROAD/ TRACK TYRE UK

As some of you may know, I've got awful rear tyres on the car atm...

I know this subject has been beaten to death in past threads, I've done my homework . But I'd like some specific options and specific places to buy in the UK...

I'm looking for a full set of tyres fronts and rears for fast road/ track. The car doesn't see rain so that is less of an issue.

The wheels are rear 18" 8 ET 52 rear 9.5 ET 47....

I'm currently running 225 40 front and 245 40 ( not out of choice) !

At the moment I'm looking at these tyres from 'Deamon Tweaks':

TOYO T1 - R
TOYO R1 - R
FALKEN FK452
MAXXIS MA - Z1

I like what I've read about the TOYO R1 - R option...

What would you recommend regarding sizes and tyres (I'm not adverse to using wheel spacers) ?

TA

I've got T1-Rs on mine and have been very happy with them although they're not really a track day tyre (which I guess is what you're looking for?)

The TOYOs are a decent choice, I know the skyline guys find they wear pretty quick on track with a heavier car.

Falkens 452 are not really track tires just cheap but good sporty road tyres.

I've heard good things about Federal 595 RSR's

The new Michelin Pilot Super Sports are getting rave reviews as a perfect compromise for road and track:

http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/mich...ot-super-sport

The ideal sizes for 18s on a 964 would be 225/40 and 265/35 which I guess is what you were running before the rear puncture?

I would get a set myself but they don't do them in anything smaller than 18s

Edited to add: Looks like Michelin are only offering a limited range in the 18s so you would have to go with 225/45 and 265/40.

Thanks for all the feedback gentlemen.

Ok here are some other options:

FEDERAL 595 RS-R Tyre
TOYO R888

But would these be too track orientated...?

I'm not worried about road noise or comfort

Those look great, thanks Steve. Exactly 225/40 and 265/35 were my old sizes. Would those sizes cause rubbing though? And doesn't 45 and 40 mean the tyres will be taller? Is it not better to go wider than taller?

Cheers,

Cheers,
Yes, it wasn't until I looked more in depth at what sizes Michelin were offering the 18s in, that I found how limited the choice was. The taller tyres would cause you more rubbing problems - you'd have to raise the suspension a little and I'm sure you don't want to do that. Unfortunately, the modern trend towards bigger wheels is a PIA for those of us running older cars. The super sport is a big development in tyre technology but it looks like only newer cars will be able to take advantage of it.

Thanks Steve, one last thing before I hassle you too much:

Some other options:

FEDERAL 595 RS-R Tyre
TOYO R888
Yokohama Advan A048R

Why not get a set of slicks and a roof rack to carry them for the track day?!

I was gonna suggest something similar. Those track tyres give you geat grip, but ideally you want them on a set of wheels that take with you and swap just for the track, rather than drive there and back on. Thats what I do with the skyline, although I'm not fusy what the tyres are so long as I have a different set to drive home on. The tricky bit is that the 964 would need a roof rack or somesuch whereas the datsun's a full size saloon so I fit one in the boot and three in the back seats.

Oh the other thing about having dedicated track wheels is you can choose a size which have a good supply of track tyres say because they are used as a control tyre in one or more race series.

Thing is I only want one set of tyres for road and track...

...what are the pitfalls of using road legal track tyres on the road?

The only ones on your list I have direct experience of are the Toyo R888s which I use on my track wheels. They are perfectly fine on the road but much too noisy for regular road use IMO. It sounds like all the wheel bearings are about to fall apart. So like others have mentioned I only put the track wheels on for the track day. As I said, they're perfectly fine to drive to/from the track so there's no need to worry about how you're going to carry an extra set to the track.

You can pick up a set of 17 inch 996 carrera 4 wheels or Boxster twists for about £250. The only problem with an extra set of wheels is having somewhere to store them. I'm guessing this could be an issue for you?

If it has to be a compromise tyre, and the Mich super sport is out because of sizes, I would have a look at the Toyo R1r which they claim is good for road and track and is available in the sizes you want:

Draw backs of track tyres for road use, cost they tend to cost a lot more than road tyres, they dont come with full tread 5 or 6mm whilst road tyres have 8mm.
They struggle with very wet conditions, and dont work in the very cold.
They allso wear quicker than road tyres.

Have a look at yoko ad08,s they come with 8mm and are supposed to be very good for road and track use.
The rsr,s are supposed to be good, and cheap.

+1

I went with Nitto NT01s and they are about the same as the R888s
