I have three of them now - does that answer your question? I need to sell one, but that's another story. I have been tempted to sell them all and buy a 996TT or sell 1-2 and get a 996 for a "comfy" daily driver. But, the bottom line is that I love driving these cars every day, year round, and turn around to take an admiring glance back in the parking lot - every time, never fails. I still can't believe that I actually own one of these cars (ok, three...).

My wife said as long as I didn't get a mistress or boat she didn't care. She has come to realize the 964 is a mistress.

My progression was from "3.2 Carrera" to a "993C4S" to a "997 GT3" and now two 964s. No regrets other than I would like to have a convertible some day.

I just spent 30 minutes crafting a well written and helpful reply only to have RL tell me I was not logged in when I hit submit.

Here are the high points:

I have owned a 993 for the past 6 years that I love.
Three and a half years ago my son wanted a 911. 964's were the best deal going: Classic lines, 3.6L engine, $10K less than a similar 993, $7K less than similar 3.2. He bought a 964 and we have enjoyed it ever since. After three days of ownership we both concluded that we had received full value for the purchase price.

If I were in the market today I would snap up one of the several incredible cars for sale here on the 964 board or on the 993 board. I would be extremely happy with either model.

My criteria would be as follows: desirable mods/upgrades (suspension mainly, less important would be a documented top end rebuild by a respected shop), proximity, fanatical seller, and finally color.

I would likely avoid cars with most aftermarket wheels and aftermarket aero kits.

Get a PPI and spend lots of time perusing both boards to get an idea of how much others love their cars and what issues you will encounter.

GLWP.

Having owned mine for a year now, wish I would have bought it 5 years ago or more.

The only difference in my action would have been to wait until I could afford a 964 turbo. Have never been interested in any post 1994 Porsches, just me.

964 every time for me, despite the 993's *** as oracle correctly points out!

Also, although I spent slightly over the odds for a well-maintained example, a large part of the appeal to me is getting hands-on, despite my relative inexperience. The 964 is a great car for figuring out how things work and I'm getting great satisfaction from getting under the boot-lid.

Interesting topic for me... here's my opening line: I want to buy another Porsche. I'm sitting on the cash and can't find anything I like - what a luxury problem right? My problem is that I drive the 964 to take the, let's say 996 Turbo, for a spin.

The result is that when I drive home I'm convinced the 964 is a better car for me. Who cares about comfort or acceleration numbers when you can have a fantastic driving experience for less money.

This comes from someone who has driven pretty much all 911 variants produced going back to 74 (and crashed a 996 Carrera - just to say I properly drove them). And the Boxster range and the Cayman range (yes, including the R).

Don't take my word for it, just go drive a bunch of them yourself. You'll know what I'm talking about then.

One word of caution: all 911s will cost you good money. My 997 maintenance cost me as much as the 964... the difference: the 997 was going to the dealer for warranty purposes, the 964 to an independant certified specialist.

I'm driving mine daily (well as much as practically possible) and a number of things have gone wrong quickly (clutch, clutch hydrolic circuit, starter, battery, two cracked rear wheels not found on the ppi BTW, window motor, plenty of little trim, new rotors in front, my headlight washers don't work, the seat has a busted control switch, the speakers were replaced, some seals were replaced, the rear fog light is inop, ...). Simply because the car was not driven frequently by the PO - good thing I got this limited edition model well under the global market price so I was fine dropping the money on it.

So my conclusion is: I'll keep the money (or invest it somewhere) and just pay for the first two or three rebuilds, resprays with it... I get to drive a car that's more fun and I want to be able to say I put half a million miles on my car

In my experience I should've just bought the 964 and not bothered with the rest, because every mile driven in a non-964 is one you can't get back.

I am probably very biased

Note: the only exception to this would possibly be a 993 C4S, 993 turbo or a 997 GT2RS. Those three I really liked!

In all honesty, my first choice since I was 8 was a Ferrari 308. But in 2nd place was the 911. That stayed the same till my early 20's( in the early 90's) but instead of just any 911 it was honed down to the 964. Ferrari was still number 1 however. When I finally started to look seriously into purchasing a car a few years back, a good friends small 993 collection peaked my interest, but I just couldn't get past the nose. That wasn't the look of the 911 I grew up lusting after..(albeit, in 2nd place still as it was.)
When I moved to Austria 9 years ago, I really investigated 308's, 328's and then finally realized that they don't hold a candle to the build quality of any 911. Small production runs on those Enzo cars didn't help.
I'm a very new Owner/member of the club so to speak. (Feb 2011) I had a choice to buy my black 964 or a polar silver 993 for some 4k euro more. My car was on the high side at 35k€. But, I would make the same decision each time, but that's just me. You need to live with the decision. Spend more. You get what you pay for.

Seems like the general consensus is yes, and I am in complete agreement. The newer cars have a definite appeal, but don't provide enough feedback (smell, sound, feel) for me. The older cars are a blast to drive, but don't make great daily drivers and most lack the punch of the 3.6. I've always thought that the 964 is a great mix of look and feel with enough creature comforts to make the car fun to drive every day.

In the scope of things, which Porsche to buy is a good problem to have...

I just recently started playing with the idea of a 308 GTS... But it goes against my loyalty to the marque, so I shelved that idea.

So the bottom line is: I would buy 2 964s in hindsight. A coupe and a cab. Now if only I could find a clean cab here

i bought my 964 c2 five and a half years ago and made 120k km

i spent a lot of money on the car, really a lot, but it is logical: i have made more kilometers than any other pal i know in a car so old, so, i have all the problems that others have in ten or fifteen years... that´s why my car is now in a really good condition... everything that was about to break, broke and was replaced or fit

in fact... it would have been a much more logical decision to buy a newer car...

...but...

i never, never, NEVER would go back to buy another one

why?

let's see... i have enjoyed it as much as i never imagined, i have attended a lot of trackdays, i have traveled through whole europe, i have made a lot of friends... i have felt the car was something which i had never had before; perhaps that would have happened to me with some other model, but the fact is that it happened with this very especial car; i only regret i did not buy one in 1999 when i bought my late new car

just buy one!

I have had my 964 almost 2 years now and it pains me this summer that I did not drive it, it's been put away in storage until I can save up some money to rebuild the motor (this winter, yeah!!) and I would do it again in a heart beat. I had a 01 C2 Cab as my first Porsche and loved it..... until I drove a friends 993. Sold my car within 2 months and the hunt for a 993 was on, searched and then my family grew and my money had to be redirected. I was disappointed, but after some research found out that a 964 was similar to a 993 but $15k less so the hunt was back on but for a 964. Took a while, found one cheap but in need of repairs I knew I would do anyways and pulled the trigger. Haven't looked back since and would do it all over again.

Would like to add another P car to the stable and that would be a 993TT, so I am saving and searching. Not interested in any new Porsches, just classic air cooled ones now.

Yes, I'd buy a 964 again but I'd look for one from the south so have less issues with rust-frozen bolts and I'd probably get a C2 instead of a C4 for less weight at the track.

I'd never considered a 993 as I don't find them very attractive.
