I don't even think that you need the metal bracket, just drill out the rivet and see if you can mount the lens without it before cutting the bracket. I did not reuse the metal bracket when I installed my air ducts, I simply used the flat washer supplied and I have not had any issues. If you want a bracket, just make your own with a small piece of metal and keep the factory one intact.

I found an easier way to do that:
If you do not cut the two studs but just drill out the rivet then the backing plate will stay in place and not fall down.
However you can push it far enough backwards so that you can install the new lenses (on the driver's side it's a very tight fit though)
This makes the whole process reversible if you ever want to bring it back to stock.
Instead of removing or cutting the studs ( I like to keep cars original) one can simply drill two small holes in the back of the trim pieces as follows, quick and completely reversible install.
