Great thread, for those who are weighing modifications! Here's my assesment....

Sparco Evo seat/5-point harness (track: 9, street: 2) - Surprising difference in car control when you don't have to use the steering wheel to brace yourself in (track) corners; and can feel what the car is doing through your butt/back better. But no fun for daily driving - difficult to get in and out of; can't move; hot; passengers (especially females) hate it.

MPSC (R-compound) tires (track: 9) - When at proper temp, you get better braking, handling, and acceleration out of corners. Not many mods can offer all of that! On the other hand, they let go pretty quickly; and the wet/cold performance is not fun.

19mm adjustable rear sway bar (9) - Byebye understeer!

Chris Walrod polyurethane control arm bushings (7) - Haven't tried them on the track yet, so I don't feel like I can judge them yet. Most noticeable difference is in hard braking - definitely more solid and stable feeling. Haven't noticed handling difference yet. Installation was difficult!

Wevo Blues (6) - slightly more solid feeling, without too much noise or vibration.

Primary bypass (6) - better sound, but no noticeable improvement in power.

RS droplinks (5) - Wouldn't even know that they were there if I couldn't see them. But why not, if you have to replace them anyway.

H&R coilovers (4) - rough for the street; and not enough for the track.

For those who rank the RS shifter as a "must do", do you think the improvement came partially from new bushings as well? I know when I replaced all of the worn-out bushings in my stock shifter, the gear changes improved dramatically.

I am sure that helps. I have the sport shifter as well and absolutely love it. The feel is great and I never worry about a missed shift. It's just another option that further enhances the driving experience of the 964. I doubt I'll ever sell my 964.

Aint that the truth...I'm currently saving for some KW v3's. The stiffer spring rates/adjustable dampers will be a welcome improvement on my dual use car.

I'm still concerned that the 170/455 spring rates of the KW V3's won't be enough to keep me satisfied on the track.

How close are you to running lap record pace?

If you aren't familiar with it, find Larry Herman's piece over in the racing/DE section on increasing spring rates, and what it really gets you.

Thanks Ken, I just checked out a couple of Larry's very interesting posts. I believe that this is the one that you were refering to:
https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...-your-car.html

And here's "part 2":
https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...-part-2-a.html

To answer your question, I'm certainly not running lap records. I'm more interested in improving my driving, and safely approaching the limits of the car with it's current setup. Larry's articles beautifullly illustrate the compromise with higher spring rates, which definitely got my attention. My concern with the KW spring rates was nothing more than just that... concern. They may be the greatest coilovers on the planet for a dual purpose DE/street car. Still, I'm curious why they use lower front spring rates than any other 964 option (similar to stock); and the front/rear spring rate ratio is quite a bit different than other 964 performance options. I do hear lots of great things about the KW's, such as in this thread.

Of course most mods that I read about here get glowing reviews!

Since this thread is about mods, what would be your suggestion for when or why someone should move to stiffer spring rates on a (primarily) DE car? From your experience, what is the learning curve like when moving to increasingly higher spring rates?

Thanks for the insight.

I've been thinking about that lately too. Think maybe the larger split front to back makes it so you don't really need a larger rear swaybar?

KW will make them with slightly higher spring rates if you request it. I have v1's and totally love them, for a street car I think KW got the valving/spring rate perfect.

Sounds like a sweet ride and the Primary Muffler bypass pipe is an easy and inexpensive way to improve the power, sound and shed some pounds off the rear end. Enjoy it and PM me if you ever have any questions.

Here is my effort at dragging this thread back to topic:

My car required a great deal of time and money to finally sort out and only recently have I been able to start upfixing stuff. So...
- The mod that has made the most difference was the install of 993 motormounts. DIY, about $225
- With that being said, the funnest mod has been the installation of the CBP, G-Pipe, and K&N cone filter. Less weight, little more zip, awesome sound.
Question: are motor mounts a mod...or a repair?

and speaking of motor mounts, did you guys reinforce the engine carrier as well? I have Wevo blacks waiting to go in, but am afraid I gotta pony up for a reinforced carrier. anyone?

If replaced with originals = repair

Of replaced with other mounts that stock = Mod

Modifications are much more fun than repairs...

I went with the Wevo Blues and did not reinforce.... yet. I think that most would agree that reinforcing is the safe and sane approach, as there are supposedly examples of broken engine carriers and the catastrophic results. For now, I am monitoring the engine carrier for bending or cracking, and hope that I would see something before disaster struck. But I don't know! Anyone?
