Default Bodywork Repairs - It's Finished.

Recently started doing bodywork repairs to a '90 targa. As you all like photos, here are a few to share over Independence Day weekend. I hope it doesn't scare you too much. Car is UK based so we do have a lot off salt on the roads in the winters but after 21 years and 182,000 miles, I thought it deserved a refresh. New fenders, seals, full window out respray and a lot off those "while you are in there" items.

Firstly, a few of the before photos then strip down in progress.

That is pretty scary, but like you say the salt on UK roads eventually beats the galvanizing.

I see you're in London, who's doing the work?

The main cause is not so much the salt, it's the rubber seals hardening and chaffing through the paint. You will notice from the pictures that all the corrosion starts where the seals sit, screen, scuttle, sharkfin etc.

If you want to stop this sort of thing happening to yours, change the seals before they go hard!

Alexjc4 - Cris at 911 Bodyshop/now 911 Triple R at Wembley doing the works.

Strega - Agreed, hard seals are the main reason they go in these areas. Unfortunately the rust was already in there when I bought it. Good advice to get the seals done early but if the rust is already in the joints, repairs are likely to be needed.

More photos soon.

Question reguarding the seals, I take it the body panels need to be removed to replace the seals. Mainly speeking about the front fender to cab seals on the top. Mine are pretty ugly and hardened.

Aha, I think i saw your car there when when i dropped in to get an estimate to fix my rust, about 6 weeks ago. Chris snr is a lovely guy, but he never actually quite got round to sending me the estimate. I'd be interested to hear what you are paying if you feel you can share, by pm maybe.

Have removed the rot and pieced in metal on rear wings - temporary paint for protection as work still in progress.

Targa window removed in one piece a little corrosion under and around fittings to be repaired.

New scuttle pieces have arrived and are ready to be fitted.

New OS front wing has arrived but the NS is on back order - due in about three weeks.

Delay has given us the chance to look at the paint further. It has original and a mix of one or two further coats so will be stripped back to metal.

For those with a little rust here and there, get it sorted. Mine didn't look too bad on the surface but a lot needs doing.... more photos soon

it would have been a good time to turn it into a wide body since you were cutting all the metal up and replacing

Wouldn't a WB speedster be "all show and no go"? A speedster in England - I don't think I could deal with the unpredictable weather...

I'm going for more "no show and more go" with more of a european RS spec targa - suspension and engine "upgrades"
Better for the narrower roads and congested cities over here.

Good to see you guys have plenty of ideas for your own though. Look forward to seeing your projects soon.

More pics.
Paint largely stripped,
Trial fit of front wing (fender)
Scuttle pieces inserted - just some minor lead loading to get even gaps
Old scuttle piece with corrosion to edge of panel hidden by front wings
Doors stripped and repairs to check strap area completed
Still waiting for the other new front wing (fender) from Porsche - they have pressed it so hopefully delivered within two weeks.

Thanks for posting the photos. Any chance you have some photos of the underside?
Cheers

I don't have any decent underside photos as it is a little hard to get to at the moment.

We have steam cleaned to allow proper inspection.

It is in good condition though as the wheel arch liners, stonechip protection, waxoil and the oil leaks from the engine before it was rebuilt have worked well in protecting it. (Oil leaks = Air-cooled self preservation?)

The back bumper supports were replaced due to corrosion when I did the engine and clutch a couple of years ago.

Only works required are some minor piecing in to the top of the sills where it had stainless steel cover pieces on the door openings and at the bottom edge of the wings. Other than that - i have replaced the corroded screw fixings for the sill covers and am replacing the jacking points as there was some minor surface corrosion where the stone chip coating had been damaged through use. All of this is very much 964 OCD though.
