Autocross - wheel/tire options & suggestions
Hi gang,
I had picked up a set of 7.5/9x17" replica twist wheels that I was going to mount some sticky street rubber (Dunlop Star Specs) on, but it turns out that all four are bent. I can have them straightened at $110/ea but I don't really know if these heavy replicas are worth the expense. I'm considering a couple options:
1) Get some sticky tires for my D90's in 205/225 sizes. Both the Dunlop Star Specs and the Hankook R-S3 (which are rumored to be faster for a/x) are available in this size.
2) Straighten the turbo twist replicas and mount 225/255 Star Specs on them (R-S3 not currently in stock).
3) Wait out for a decent deal on some straight 17" wheels (either Cup1/2 or Twists)
4) Stick with my current 225/255 Yoko S.4 "ultra high performance all-seasons" with a 400 treadwear rating.
I think that a good summer street tire will at least make me somewhat competitive in my class where some folks are running r-tires. I know that there is still plenty of time that I can pick up with better driving skills, but I feel like I'm working a super-beetle against GT3's with the all-seasons vs. r-tires. I also don't want my car budget to spiral out-of-control and would like to keep the wheel/tire budget under $1k. I'm not dedicated to winning the class and so ruled out going the R-compound route mostly for expense.
Any tips are appreciated!

Budget in mind:
I run D90's -- 7's & 8's with 225/245 Toyo RA1's on my C2--track not autocross.
Most on this forum run 17's or larger. I was looking for the least expensive route as well and found two 7's and used my exsisting D90 8's that came with the car.
Plus you will save a few bucks on 16's vs. 17's.
The tire selection is becoming slim in 16's but there is still several options.

When running R tires in the SCCA Stock classes I used 16" Cup 1's with 225/50 - 245/45 Hoosier A6's or Kumho Victoracers.....now I run SCCA Street Tire and use Yokohama AD08's in 205/55 - 225/50 sizes. The Yokohama's are outstanding on the 964, excellent turn-in and steering response.

If I was still running R tires I would be more aggressive with the camber....I find with the AD08's the car is currently very neutral....also because of SCCA rules the springs and sway bars are stock and I use Bilstein HD's.

earlydays - understand were you are coming from - rules are rules - you are running in stock ?
RSAerick some 16's are as large as the low profile 17's so spin up is off set - weight maybe but some of the OEM 16's are well over 17lbs

Burning Brakes
I was under the impression that the 16" D90's were a bit lighter than the Cup I's... but I may be wrong. Still, even a small improvement in unsprung, rotating mass is highly sought after for performance gains.

D90's are fairly light, but I can't get nearly as much rubber on the 6/8" widths as 7.5/9". Would they really be as fast?
A/X is just a fun distraction and the car is practically 100% street. I'm on H&R + Bilsteins which bumps it into a prepped class. Stock -1.15 rear camber and -2.0 in front (as little as shop could get at this ride height). I don't have any complaints with how the car handles except it's slightly darty on the highway.
