Question Oil change and only put in 9 quarts

My life is a little crazy, we are moving down to GA and building a new house so I needed some help with the 964. I had the shop repack the CV's and put on new boots. At the same time I asked them to do an oil change to save me some time. Looking over the invoice I noticed they only put in 9 quarts. I was always able to get 10 in when I did my 993. I am guessing they did it cold and did not get oil from the coolers. I am a little worried because I just ran a tank of Techron and not all of the old oil is out. My question is should I care about 3 quarts of oil that have traces of Techron?

There will always be 2-3 quarts of oil left in the system that you are unable to drain. This is oil in the oil lines to the front cooler and across the front to the left side cooler (if installed). This oil won't drain because it is blocked by the thermostat which would be closed when you drain the oil.

It is normal for a 964 to take between 9-10 quarts at an oil change depending on where between the min / max marks you run the oil. I like to run 1/2 way between when the oil is hot (190F). I will generally start with 8 quarts, start and run the engine, then add the remaining while the engine is running.

Thanks Geoffrey.

I changed my 993 HOT so I must have been getting it with the thermo open. I too ran the 993 half way up the twist, it seemed to burned less oil this way.

I always buy 11 qts., and I usually get 10 back in, but it has been anywhere from 9 to 10 + a little. No biggie. I wouldn't sweat the Techron, you're talking about a really tiny residual amount that might have gotten into the crankcase, now diluted by a lotta new oil. You never get it completely empty anyway, no matter what. No worries.
