What is a bit of pm?
Just a fast note for the A/C if you think the eveap. coil is freezing up check the air flow when blowing cold and then after the heat comes. If the coil is freezing up there should be less air flow over the coil as there is less coil area to pass air. Found this out at work and turns out just to be a dirty coil. A bit of pm and all the dirt was gone and a/c was working great after that. Just one fast check. As for you guys up there north of Houston I have friends up in Duncanville and Desoto Next time I am going up to see them I will take the P car and get with you two. Your paint looks GREAT nice work

Another thing to consider is that the a/c lines might be plugged up.
I am running an aftermarket system in my car, but using OEM parts. I had similar symptoms, but instead of 20 minutes of cold air, I was getting 5. We tried topping off the coolant, replacing the expansion valve, and almost chalked it down to the evaporator freezing up.
As a last ditch attempt, we sent the car to an a/c specialist and he found 20 years of accumulated gunk in the lines from corrosion.
The a/c works fine now, except for when the engine temperature or the sun start peaking...

Rob, I don't believe the system will work if the condenser fan is not working. At least that was the case when I had an A/C shop troubleshoot mine to find the traditional condenser rheostat failure under the battery vent.

Have you checked the refrigerant pressure? An inadequately charged system can cool but freeze the condenser because it never gets cold enough to trip the freeze switch and defrost the condenser.

receiver drier is in the left fender footwell
I replaced my eavaporator last year. Covered in grime, I was surprized air could still flow throught it. I put in the serpentine evap. http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/ac/...ml#Evaporators
The 964 thermal sensor to defrost evaporator is stuck into the evaporator at the top near center of the ac box right behind the gas tank.
If the sensor goes bad, you will get your symptoms. My Volvo had the same issue and it was just the $15 sensor , which took about an hour to get to.
On the 964 you may be able to get to it easier. I'll look when I get back from trip

Yes I've checked pressure several times. It had 2.2 r134 in it. And last time I sucked it out and recharged it I only put 2.1 in it. Didn't change anything. I'm about to change the dryer. I just took the old one off. It is very nasty and old looking so I'm assuming it's the original. Hopefully this makes it work better

so you have all refrigerant out now?
I'd pull off the dryer, separate all the lines from devices, i.e. compressor, condensor, expansion valve, and purge the lines with solvent, then blow dessicated air through lines.
You'll have to add some oil later.

I've had my '90 C2 since 1998 and consequently know quite a bit about the 964.
