Question 964 Oil Leak?

I am the proud new owner of an 89' C4 that I adopted from a family member who has owned it since August 89. The car has been a well pampered garage queen for most of its life (61k). I have been taking on the oil leaks one at a time, all of which have been coming from the top. I have replaced the temp sending units "O" ring and both crush rings, and the breather gasket appears to be dry. This leak gets worse when I keep the oil level above a half on the dipstick?

Congrats, and beautiful car. These cars look terrific in Red. I agree that the car needs to be whipped hard and put away wet, an Italian tune up of sorts. It should/may stop leaking then, maybe, sort of, who knows. It is the most enjoyable way of finding out though

The more you drive it, the more you'll love it! I use Brad Penn 20/50, and it has helped slow the leaks a little, and has the ZDDP these cars love.

Maybe you can too...where are you located? If in the States, here's a Brad Penn locator (no affil., but I have used this service a couple times):

Thanks... I will try changing the oil and while I'm in there the breather gasket (5 bucks and half a day)... It still bafflles me why it leaks more with the level above a half when the PSI is always at 5 @2000 rpm's...

Have you isolated where the leak is happening? Is your engine cover in place? I would remove it, clean the bottom of the engine thoroughly, take the car for a spirited drive, then return home, jack up the car and look for wet or shiny spots. The engine cooling air blows oil around and if you don't do the cleaning first, you can be mislead as to the true source of the leak.

Congrats on the 'adoption', car looks great.

Are you sure you're following the correct procedure for checking the oil level before topping up? Overfilling can cause leaks from the manifold (which is split in the center). Oil pooling due to overfilling will be more obvious if you plan on doing the breather gasket.

Here's a good thread to review...

You could remove the fan/generator and spray with simple green and wash out the top of the engine and then try to isolate any leak. I do that about every 2nd year just to remove the grime that builds up.

Thanks Guys... Rob, The engine cover is off and after a spirited drive the oil run down between 4/5 and 5/6. I removed the alternator last time to find the top wet and the temp sending unit being the source... I will try this process again to find the new source... Ken, After being a newby on the first day (which involved draining some oil and going down to porsche for a gasket... lol) and then pulling out the owners manual for the correct procedure. I have only been adding a 1/4 to 1/2 quart at a time to narrow down when the leak increases.

Thanks for all the good advice... I changed the oil to Swepco 20-50 along with the breather hose which was hard as a rock... This has slowed the leak to just a drop after a spirited drive... Has anyone changed out the breather gasket? looks like it could be Pandora's box with the fuel lines and brackets....
