Performance Automotive in Pennsylvania has a great reputation with the East Coast crowd:

In my opinion even if it cost $10k for a rebuild you are getting a now 'new' 964 for 1/8th the cost of a new Porsche. I'd go bone stock on the rebuild for reliability sake and spend cash on exhaust and intake mods that you can bolt on/off as need be....maybe get a chip if you're feeling brave.

chris im surprised you didn't suggest black forest. easy decision: send the engine or car to mark kinninger at black forest in san diego (770 miles). i would send it to mark before i would send it to dallas.

Also TPWS and Moorespeed in Austin. I have personal experience with TPWS, I can definitely recommend them.

alan, did yours go up in smoke soon after buying it from that guy in pasadena? Or were you made aware of the issue before buying it from him?

Full rebuild will cost around $15K. That will be one where it is done right.

I was aware of a few leaks which I actually took care of in the first few weeks...oil line. Being as tho most 964's will need a rebuild at some time I decided to update & rebuild with correct cylinders and just an overall service to take care of any 21 year old issues. I don't plan on selling & will have a newish car when it's all said & done. The timing and $$'s worked in my favor for the rebuild.

The ultimate preventative maintenance more than anything.

Thanks ..should be nice. The only real problem I'm having now is the 100% drive time in my Toyota...great car...reliable...BORING! ...might mount a dummy clutch pedal just to ease the pain of 5 speed withdraw :~)

I just recently looked into this very thing. Put out a feeler for a reputable shop in the Bay Area and on Steve Weiner's suggestion I contacted RMG which is in your area. Well it was a brief but informative conversation. I was asked what year and model I had and the response was, Don't do it, the car is not worth it and that a complete overhaul would be $25,000 and if anyone tells me less that they are not being totally honest. My car being an early build 964 would need a bit more as rebuild updates are concerned evidently and there are associated things that should/must be done at that time that add to the cost as well. I appreciated the honest opinion because essentially he was turning away work so I tend to believe what I heard. I take it all with a grain of salt but when mine does quit it will be time to move on to another "P Car".

I have an early 90 and almost at 100K on the ODO, when the time comes for the full rebuild I will park it, buy something to get me from here to there and do the rebuild myself

And it will only go higher as parts and skills become more scarce over the years.
