i posted this picture earlier in another topic but i probably should have titled it different. has a number on it that says sachs 488 911 618.113.01.it was found zip tied under passenger side dash wrapped in electrical tape with a melted cover.trying to figure out if it is something i need to check

+1 on that being the easiest test. I had to replace mine because the door locks stopped working.
The melted casing is more likely to have been caused by a split heater hose in the footwell (they're made of paper), rather than the locking unit overheating.

Here's the identical looking part that has the identical part number that I took out of my car....and I can assure you that when I took it out the central door locking stopped working but the spoiler continued to raise and lower like it should.

Kuchar, I thought it was a spoiler control also, but mine is an older car and a little different so I didn't speak up. I knew the enclosures looked similar, but I didn't know the boards also looked so similar. Spoiler control is under the seat and central locking is under dash. Here's the spoiler control board for the '89:
