Default Trying to adjust valves

Trying to get the valves adjusted and belts changed on my C2. When I turn the nut in front of the pulley, it spins the pulley, not anything else. It seems that maybe I should tighten the bolt and the triple square thread for the alternator, will that allow me to turn the crank? Am I going at it all wrong? Usually I don't get beat by simple things, since I haven't done it on a 911, I want to be sure it is done right.
TIA for your help.

Brian

If I understand you right, you are using the nut on the alternator shaft to turn the engine, but only the nut/pulley and shaft turns. There are 2 pulleys and 2 belts, one turns the altenator the other turns the fan, they are independent of each other. I use a wrench on the nut and push on the belt with my other hand to turn the engine, or you can just grab the pulley with both hands pushing in on the belt at the same time, rock it back and forth to get passed TDC until Z1 it lined up.
Hope this makes sense to you.

Have you removed a spark plug from each cylinder? If not do it. Makes it much easier to turn the engine.

+1 - Remove the spark plugs (ie vent the cylinders so you are not working against the compression stroke). The other thing I do, is pinch the fan belt as I try to turn the pulley, it gives the belt more tention.

Sometimes safety sounds silly but, never out of place.

Please be careful with hands on belts around pulleys. The reason should be obvious...

Awesome! Works like a champ! Thanks for the heads up. Feeling pretty dumb it was that simple, but that's what makes the interweb so great! Thanks!

Yeah, don't underestimate the power of disconnecting the battery at the negative terminal when doing work on the engine... It helps in the safety category.

I have a friend who has a very strange looking ring finger on his right hand, as he lost half of it in an A/C pulley. He got too close and it plucked it right off. He got it sewn back on, but it sure looks strange.
