Frankvan - in the past I've had connection problems with my hammer when the K line was not making connection though the L line was. The L interrogates all the control units - ccu, motronic, etc. - with a 5 baud signal for the various addresses, and the CEL and scantool red "connecting" field flash at the same sequence. You're seeing that. Once interrogated, the control unit responds on the K line at 8800, etc and there's an led that indicates this traffic. Then you're connected. If you don't make it this far, it's worth looking at the female plug in the passenger well. I've had to tweak the "fingers" that compress around the male pin of the 19 pin plug. A small sharp screwdriver was all that was needed, just pass it through the front, get behind the finger and pry it some, not much .

I'm using this - it's an FTDI compatible OBD2 cable. Works on all the OBD2 cars i've plugged it into. Kind of hoped it would (and should) work with the 964 and scantool.

And the 19 pin porsche adapter looks identical to Tore's on his website (19 pin round to standard OBD2 connector).

I'll def check the car side connections - my homemade rs232 adapter used pins that i manually poked into the car and may have opened it too much to make a good connection.

OK, if you want one of my round 19 pin plugs w/8 foot of cable from when I was involved in making a few of the scantools, PM me with your address and I'll send one. I think I have a few in the garage.... I see you have a homemade scantool.

Please observe that many of the 19-pin adapters on eBay have the wrong pin connections. I've tried several.
Cheers,
Tore

Tore,
what should the pins on the round plug correspond to on the OBD2 plug?
Like i've said, i've got continuity that's appropriate for the K (7) and L (15) lines in the OBD2; do the 12V (2,3, or 16?) and ground (4,5,10,or 11?) connections need to be there as well?

Ground and 12V definetly have to be connected. GND 19-pin pin 10, +12V is pin 13. There's more signals, but not necessary for normal OBD comnnection, details here:

Tore thanks,
which pins should those correspond to on the OBD2 connector end?
Choices of 4,5,10,or 11 for ground
2,3,or 16 for 12V.

OBD2 pins 4 and 5 are GND and pin 16 is +12V.

ok, i've got porsche pin 13 going to obd2 pins 12 and 16 (12V)
pin 10 going to 4 and 5 (Gnd)
pin 7 going to 15 (L)
pin 8 going to 7 (K)
Still no connection although the CEL flashes three times when i start Scantool. I'm going to re-install the FTDI driver, maybe that's the problem.

Steve - Is your baud rate set correctly and are you using the correct port assignment in Windows? Once I set mine, the scantool worked for me.

Very old topic , but someone might read it. Please DONT attempt to use OBD2 style cables/interfaces on the 964 ! It wont work ! The 964 is obd 1 and used a different protocol. Doug Boyces software will NOT work with a obd2 style interface.
