Default 1991 Motor Mounts Cabriolet versus Coupe, $200 difference? Need the cab mounts???

Hi Guys,

My motor mounts on my 1991 Cabriolet are dust.

Apparently there are $400/each Cabriolet mounts and $300/each Coupe mounts?

Finding the Cab mounts has been a problem.

Any thoughts on whether I can go with the Coupe mounts?

I'm not a race car driver but I will still burn rubber and take some nice hard turns.

I'm wanting to save the money and time if possible.

Any suggestions would be really really really valuable to me!

Thanks!

James

I didn't think they were different from the coupe. The Turbo and RS are different.

Yes they are expensive liquid filled one time use buggers. IE if you pull the engine you need to replace the mounts every time and they are about $300 each.

There are a cheap solid rubber clone for about $200 pr., but they are not very good mounts and you will get some extra engine vibration in the cabin. Also the stud likes to pull out when you loosen them.

BTW you are in the wrong section and should be down in the 964 area.

Hi James, Welcome to Rennlist. I am moving your post to the 964 section that deals with the 90-94 cars.

Go easy on that "Burning rubber"

Best,
Marc

I put WEVOs in my cab, same ones as the coupe version.

993 mounts are compatible and half the price IIRC

There was a discussion about this a couple months back and apparently there is a superceded part # in the pipeline that was to be less money at least according to Pelican.

If you choose to do the solid mounts, RS mounts, and or track the car it is a very good idea to get the engine braket reinforcements, which do need welded on, otherwise they are prone to cracking.

I just replaced mine this weekend. I put the 993 C4 in my 1992 coupe. The old ones were shot (about 1" to 1.25" of sag + sloshing fluid inside). After I changed them, shifting was much more precise, no more free play at the stick, I also experienced a much more pleasant ride without the faint vibration.

I got them from Pelican Parts, for a reasonable price of $116 each,.. I believe.

Part# 993-375-049-09

Very easy job too, took me only 45 minutes all together.

I believe this is not true. They are oil filled but they are sealed units and they don't need to be replaced every time you drop the engine. My engine in my C2 gets dropped once a year and I had the original mounts until I replaced them with solid mounts last year since it is a DE car. I have the original mounts which have 53k miles on them and they are in perfect condition and can easily be reused.

We I get home I will copy the page out of the manual again.

It clearly states removing the nut on the mount will destroy the mount.

Per Porsche Service Manual.

They are talking about the center bolt and nut that holds the mount together. This has nothing to do with dropping the motor.

Maybe it doesn't apply but I knew I saw it somewhere. It was in a 964 thead about using 993 mounts

Thats from a Boxster workshop manual, so maybe the nuts are different?

But on 964/993's undoing the nuts does not do anything to the mount at all.

Donno? I just thought I remember something about it. The implication by Wayne was that the 993 mount is the same part number as the Boxter trans mount and undoing it would destroy it.

From what I remember from my 944 days a good hydrolic mount doesn't make any noise if you shake it and a bad one will slosh around if you shake it. And they were always going bad.

I know my bad 964 sloshed around. I am not sure if the same applies.

In any event, get the correct hydrolic mounts. I got the solid mounts and don't like them.

The car drove, shifted and felt a lot better but there is some engine vibration you will feel in the cabin.

I need to do a new DMF soon it just started making noise so I will like do the proper mount at that time and put my solid rubber mounts up for sale. They have less than a 1000 miles on them.
