Default Oil overflow?

A couple of weeks ago the alternator died on me and I had it towed to my usual local garage to have it fixed (still looking for a porsche specialist) and I checked the oil today and the oil mark was at, well its hard to describe so I'll draw a picture.

I remember there being two rivets and then there were two other markers on each side mine is over the second rivet thats why im a bit worried, I've been driving it alot recently (a bit hard if i may say ) it seems like the guys may have given it to much oil.

I'm not to mechanically inclined but I think i should be able to handle and oil change this could also explain my oil leak.

Also what is a good oil choice to put in a 964 C2? During the winter it is usually high 20s to mid 30s and in the summer it can be anywhere from 80-95.

edit: My oil temperature and pressure appears to be normal but during idle the line is a bit above the top marker on the reservoir gauge though I never really trusted it.

The gauge is the trusted source. Drain a little off until it reads halfway.

FWIW .. I pushed my gauge to about 3/4 full and worried that it might be overfilled, I had read about guys having success with a turkey baster in the oil fill pipe.

I tried pushing a thin clean hose about 1m into the oil fill pipe and couldn't even touch the oil.

I have no idea how the turkey baster thing worked unless it was way overfilled.

Maybe loosening the oil tank bolt or engine case bolt would be easier?

buy one of those cheap plastic pumps you hook on a drill and pump it out. The thin plastic hose goes right in the tank. I use one to change the oil in my boat motor.

how do you do that? I pushed about 1 metre of hose into the oil fill tube and never touched oil.

The gauge is electric/mechanical and can easily be off, the dipstick is your best source of accurate oil level. FWIW I fill my car to half way between the marks on the dipstick, at that level the gauge shows half or 3 o'clock.

I had to do this last weekend. When cold, put a pan under the drain of the thermostat and gently unscrew the plug but hold it in place and let about a pint out past your hands and then rescrew it in. You can wear plastic gloves to minimize exposure on your hands.

I rely on the dipstick as being the true reading. Learn how to read it and there will be no doubt as to the oil level which the guage can create if there is a poor electrical connection, defective sending unit or guage. There's not much oil in the engine and a minimal amount can be removed from the engine drain plug. I'd be hesitant in putting anything (i.e. a tube/turkey baster) other than air, fuel or oil into the engine.

go to a pet store and get 6 feet of air line tubing. ($2) use that to siphon oil from the dipstick... slow, yes, but cheap and reliable

Do a search on "Porsche" here too. Good place to go if you're unclear on the basics of automotive motor oil. Just be prepared to do about a week's worth of reading.
