Default Gearbox cost

My RSA is primarily track 80/20 and i'm looking at changing gears 3-5. As most have noted and from my telemetry I was looking at, changing these would make a noticeable difference. The question I have is price.
New gears are $750-800, plus any special tools and hardware needed and of course labor. Talked to the mechanic who would do the work and he said :
2400 gears
1100 parts
3500 labor

$7000 complete.............I have no reference to base this off of. Just wondering for those who have had this done, is this in the right ballpark? Nothing is inexpensive on these cars!

I also notice alot of guys using noting about using the 993 6 speed. What would that cost?

Your price on gears is about right fro Guard Gears

1100 does not sound unreasonable for 3 steel syncros, gasket kit, gear oil, and misc stuff.

Labor to rebuild the gearbox is about $1000. Give Joel Reiser a call 585-624-3899

Unless you want to spend lots and lots of money, a 993 gearbox doesn't really buy you much.

If you put 5 where 6 is, and replace 2-5 you get a nice dual purpose gearbox with about the same 1-5 ratios as you'll have in your 5spd, + 6th which will be about what your 5th is now.

To make it really useful, you'd really want to install an 8:32 R&P and regear 2-6th. Not cost effective for a simple 80/20 car as you say you have.

Thanks for the info.
Actually got my price wrong. $3500-4000 done. I think for the performance increase and useability of the transmission(especially 5th) makes it's a great mod.

I have that set-up on my car and I love it. Looking at the receipts, the previous owner of my car paid about $5,000 for that mod.

That price is a little low for our gears. Our gears list at $950 each these days. Your builder might be quoting you Albins gears (formerly sold in the states as Powerhaus II).

Since i'm only moving/replacing 3 gears then $4k is in the same ballpark in relation to what you did. 5th will give me 150-155mph which I won't exceed at any track I run and not going to chang to a 6spd. Looking forward to this getting done!

I'll double check the gear prices, thanks for you info!
