Default Oil pressure @ idle

Hello all,

I have a new ( to me ) 1990 C2 and I was wondering what the normal oil PSI ( Bar ) for a car at idle with warm ( 190 degree - ish ) with a standard 10/40 weight oil in the car. The tech manual states the it should be 5 Bar @ 5,000 RPM but nothing @ idle. I have noticed the oil pressure warning oil come on at a traffic light from time to time and the owners manual states that this is a "normal" condition.

Any feedback?

Thanks!!

Ummm...the oil pressure warning shouldn't come on I think.
Mine sits between 1 and 2 bars at idle when fully warm.

2 bar at hot idle mate. I would check your oil level - check the forum on how to check the level as its not the usual way!

also, enjoy the car!

In my 100.000 miles car with untouched engine the hot oil pressure at idle is somewhere between 1 and 2 (1,5 mostly) never had the oil pressure light on while idling

It could just be your pressure sender, some read lower than others.

Fully warmed up, 20w/50, and ~140 K untouched miles, mine used to sit just above 1.

I've had these exact symptoms you describe ... i.e. low OP dropping to zero. My issue turned out to be a faulty OP sender. I replaced and issue resolved.
One point of note. If you replace the sender, make sure you source this part from the dealer. There are some grey market units about. (my first install had to be replaced).

Mine is at 2 or maybe a needle width over when at operating temp. 107k miles, no rebuild.

Thank you all for the input, I have a 90K stock unit in the car and I would not be shocked at all that the pressure sending unit is starting to get weak. I am going to do a mechanical pressure check over the holiday just to double check it is not the pump. The manual for the car states " When the oil is hot, the red oil pressure light may light briefly at idle without endangering the engine" so I guess they figured that after some time these would start to read low.

Take care.

My. C2 from 90 with 260 k on the odometer gives sometimes a red light when I have to stop and the engine is hot, but the meter shows 1bar. So no worry , but being used to plane gauges which never go red (hopefully). Its a bit unnerving.
I have an RS clutch and the revs drop in the blink of an eye.

Mine sits just below 1 with the red light on in traffic. Had Porsche put a direct reading guage on and they said it is well within limits!

Normal is 1,5 to 2,0 at idle but I think even the drivers manual says below 1 (and sometimes the light can come on at idle) is still OK. the important thing is that the preassure follows the revs instantly and that needle is locked at 5 bar from 3000 revs and above.

Re: aftermarket senders, I'm on a replacement after first one failed within 4 mos. If you go that route, and it's a value judgment since they are quite a bit cheaper and not that difficult to change out, be sure to check the polarity of the terminals as some aftermarkets are shipped with the small and large spade terminals reversed. Compare the terminal labels with your current unit. The spade terminala are easy to remove and reverse if necessary.
