Cant help with Photoshop but what about this Samson colour scheme?

Unkle's steps are the easiest way, by far, (and makes me really,really wish I had PS) but PM me with your email address and I can send you a photoshop file (.psd) of this that you can open and 'play with'.

In the photoshop/gimp arena this (i.e., layer masks, modes, & transparency levels) is about a 5 out of 10-effort to do it without PS's built-in selection tools, as Unkle has described.

But opening an example and modifying/playing around with it, I've found, is a fairly fast way to learn PS's mannerisms.
And this PS file only has two layers - it's a pretty straightforward example.
