Based on your comments, a primary bypass is what you are looking for.

G-pipe cars sound nice also, but the sound is different...a gruff, woof-woof Subaru boxer/American muscle sound (at lower RPMs). G-pipe cars are a notch louder than Primary bypass cars also.

PS: the shop that cut out my primary (remember $50!), said they could easily weld it back in if I didn't like the sound...it's never going back in though.

As for (keeping the exhaust for) the next owner... if their "sole" is not stirred by the sound of my car on start up, I'm not selling to them. That said, I'm keeping my D90s for the next owner.

Thanks 911Jetta,
I didn't realize that you were talking about primary cuttout - for some reason I thought it was the secondary G-pipe. $50-ish too sounds good. Dumb question, but when the car is up in the air is it obvious what needs to come out? I have only been under my car once when the PPI was done so I cannot remember.

Porsche964FP
That sounds great- is it street legal with no cats?

Probably too loud for my use but still sounds great though.

I agree with 911Jetta it's the primary you want to start with, which increases performance more than the G-pipe and delivers a rich exhaust note.

The G-pipe deepens the rich note first started with the primary bypass.

I don't know the legalities of having no cats in the US, however in the UK cars before I believe '97 are not required to have any.

As said at low revs the G-pipe is a deep distant rumble, at high revs... well that's a different story

Pre 93 model year in the UK

So late 964s and all 993s require a cat

On the primary - don't forget about the significant weight savings of the single pipe over the large heavy muffler that runs across the rear of the car - very significant

Ok - one last input the go forth and do great things to your 964 -
If you can, also do a CAT by pass replacement - this is where you will see some good figures, and save more weight. It is a very easy mod to do and affects the quality of the exhaust tone.

+1 ^^^^^^

I still need to get a cat bypass...I don't want the car to be too much louder than it is now so I'll probably go for a straight through design, but baffled (like Fabspeed) instead of a straight through test pipe cat bypass.

(I have the feeling that...) I can safely go one more notch louder with my car in my neighborhood before someone starts complaining (ie: wife).

What does the cat bypass sound add to the exhaust note after having already done a primary bypass? A louder burst upon start up? Overall harder edge sound throughout the rev band? Burbling sound on throttle lift-off?

The sound (to me) is not that loud when you replace the CAT with a test pipe - I live in a quite neighborhood and none of my neighbors complain. They would if the car was loud. It does improve the tone as you are removing all the restrictions (dampers) that the CAt has which restricts the exhaust flow and sound. I really don't know how to answer your question as I have never run the the car with the CAT and by-pass. I could make a recording - but that would probably only give you the sound and not the volume. I do run in events where you have to be under 96 db to compete and have never had an issue.

Thanks for the comments Gus. I'm putting a cat bypass on my X-mas list!

I think you will like the results - it is an easy change over and can be done inside of half an hour -
Just pull the left rear wheel and it is right there - think all bolt (4) are 13mm then one clamp at the rear.
will need to remove the O2 sensor - make sure you loosen this before you unbolt the CAT. This could be the hardest part of the change over.

so, after telling my local exhaust shop in detail what I wanted (primary bypass) he took one look under the car and said "I would not have a clue where to start" and said no thank you........
