Default 255/40/17 rear tires

Should I go with 9 or 9.5 inch?

Either one will work just fine. I have 9" rears with 255/40/17 fits perfect.

I am going to order some wheels, and was wondering, if I should get them made in 9.5?

if you spend to have wheels made, go 18s and run nittos NT01. Choices are getting thin when it comes to 17 inch.

I think it depends what your front wheel and tire width are.
My car has 8s in front and 9s in back with 225s and 255s. The 225s are kind of stretched on the 8's, but the 255s are kind of chubby on the 9s, if you know what I mean. So for my set up I wish I had 9.5s or 10s in the rear.

If you're getting wheels made, why not fit them around a 275/40?

roll out the fenders and you could maybe fit 295/35 and still have the same 25" diameter
(has anyone fitted something that big?)

I don't like the look of 18's.

Too funny as I think I'm now satisfied that 275/35-18 NT01 are out of stock in the known universe. Probably end up with 235/275-17 for the yellow car for our track day in a couple of weeks, unless I end up with more RA1s.

I know a fellow in the Seattle area who runs a 295/35R17 on his RS America. He says it rubs a little, but it's not a big deal.

I run 8.5x17" and 9.5x17" with 245/40 and 275/40 R6's. Perfect fit on my RSA. My streets are 8x17" and 9x17" with 225 and 255. Good street setup. Both wheels are 51mm offset, and I run a 6mm spacer in the rear, equivalent to 45mm.

as long as you are going to the trouble of having wheels made might as well make 9.5 ET47

I have 9.5 on mine and have used 275/40(track) and 255/40(street) tires. For street use the difference between 9 & 9.5 is moot, for track use a 9.5 is marginally better.

You can use up to a 10 on the back of a 964

My fav after a lot of different setups:
235/40-18 on 8x18 front
275/35-18 on 10x18 rear

NT01s, I've gone 295's but that's with a lot of camber and very stiff spring rates...not alot of room and the fronts require adjusting the bumpstops or they rub at full lock...
