I'd rather use Porsche Motorsport or Guard Gears.

Gentleman,
Thank you for your kind endorsements.

Geordie,
4.00 CWP sets are still readily available these days, but they are about 50% more expensive than the 15 years ago price listed earlier in this thread.

And then you need to look at installation. Whether you get a 4.00 or a 3.44 it's going to run you 12-15 hours of labor to put it in. These cars aren't like a Shelby or a BMW. There is no separate rear end that you can just work on. The gearbox is integral and half the gearsets are stacked on the pinion. The whole thing's got to come apart to make the change. It will cost MORE in labor than a standard rebuild because replacing the CWP requires that it be reset with new pinion depth, ring gear backlash, and bearing preload all needing to be addressed. It's usually 3-4 hours less labor to rebuild/regear a gearbox.

So, when 3 gears cost near identical to a short ratio CWP, durability and performance issues aside, it costs less to do the gears because of the labor. And it's never as easy as just putting in one part or the other. Once you're in there, you'll find some worn synchros and this and that as "while you're in there" parts that are another 500-1500 Pounds to make the box right. No point in doing it and spending all that labor if you aren't going to do it right and be sure it's going to last you another 100k miles before you've got to do it again.

When you take all that into account, suddenly that G50/21 swap in the corner starts to look really attractive.
