Status update on my little project
Hello all.
I've been reading the forum more than posting recently, so in order to redress
the balance slightly, here are a some of my recent endeavors:
Stripped out all the old rotten carpet and foam.
Having removed the original sound deadening material
from both the interior of the engine bay and the parcel
shelf inside the car I started looking for a replacement.
After reading several positive reviews and seeing
it's used by McLaren, I went for Dynamat Superlite.
It's not as light as you may imagine, but in a perverse
way it makes the car seem more powerful because
the engine noise comes in much higher up the rev
range. Really I just wanted to filter out some of the
higher frequency sounds from the engine so nothing
interrupts the deep exhaust note. As soon as I can
get hold of a G-pipe I'll ditch the secondary.
I fabricated a new parcel shelf from plastic to
replace the old hardboard one which had fallen
apart. This has since been covered with carpet
and had the seat backs attached
(will post picture soon).
New dial rings went in fine. Really made a
difference visually. Aluminum pedels are
also new too. My pedal floorboard had
warped badly and looked horrible so I
fabricated a new plastic one, this is covered
by one-off carpets which I had made up.
I bought a set of valve covers second hand
and had them sandblasted (I tried Nitromors,
to remove the paint, but it was too time consuming
and the result wasn't perfect). Now I need to
spray the external faces - I'm going to use silver
brake caliper paint.
My wheels were in reasonable condition,
but had a few minor curb marks so when the
time came for new tyres I decided to have
the old tyres removed and then refurb the
wheels myself. Luckily I have a trusted tyre
fitter who really took care of the wheels as
he fitted, valved and balanced the wheels.
Hope you're all having fun with your porkers.

Yep, I like to keep'em on their toes
Now that the Tiptronic is fixed (reminds me; I'll have
to update that thread too), I've got back onto the
other stuff. I re-welded a section of the roof last week,
but haven't finished it, so no photos as yet.
I have found time to strip down the calipers and replace
the pads (Pagid road) and the Porsche anti-squeal
mushroom shims. Finally I treated the calipers and disk
bells to a coat or two of silver caliper paint.

Dynamat Superlite weight
Hi Black930
I can't give a direct comparison because the original sound proofing had
disintegrated and contained quite a lot of moisture.
I've just weighed a sheet of the Dynamat Superlite. One 815mm x 455mm
sheet weighs 900g. So that's what... 2.4kg per square metre?
I know it's a lot lighter than Dynamat Extreme, because they delivered
a box of that in error before I got the Superlite and it was hard to lift the box.
