Default Cheapest Source for JIC Cross Coilovers

What is the best lead for JIC Cross coilovers? There are a few on eBay for about US$1900.

Has anyone seen them cheaper?

I don't know if he is cheapest but I bought mine from ViperBob (VB Motorsports) and he got me customs spring rates and provided great after-sales support.

That auction just says '89-94'.

I think there are 2 types ... 89-90 & 91-94. And I have read about some people with install problems.

My car build is July 1990 C4 ... how can I confirm which version I need? Are there any quick physical checks?

As far as I know, JIC's rear will fit both early and later styles.

Not exactly, oldskews. The adjustment range of the 91-94 version is insufficient for the 89-90 cars. You cannot sufficiently raise the ride height to provide adequate wing/tire clearance. The opposite may work, however (89-90 rears on a 91-94 car), but getting the right part would obviously be the best route.

The difference is the size of the bottom canister. Pic below is from my 90 C2 with 89-90 Cross rears. The canister on the early version is approximately 8" long, while the 91-94 canister is about 2/3 the length. You raise/lower the ride height by rotating the bottom canister clockwise or counterclockwise around the threaded shock body.

With the shorter canister from the 91-94 version, the total shock body length is shorter. While you can unscrew the canister to lengthen the shock, you eventually max out the adjustment and, still, will not have the correct ride height. So for the 89-90 cars (and some early 91's), you definitely need the 89-90 version.

Thanks for the details guys. Very helpful. I understand the issue now.

So I think the check that I need to make is to check the stop of the rear strut in the engine bay and compare it to the drawing posted in the thread.
- If the top of the strut protrudes higher (drwg B) then I need the 89-90 version - as that strut is longer.
- If the top of the strut is almost level (drwg A) then I need the 91-94 version - as that strut is higher.

But that doesn't make sense because A is original and B is modified.

Maybe I should check the top of the struts as per that dwg and if A just order 89-90, or if B just order 91-94.

Or is there a measurement on the old strut that I measure?

When you get your JIC's, and before you install them, make darn sure the small spring (called the helper spring) is compressed and fixed at 30mm. This is important because if you're not careful you may compress it to less than 30mm and have a wacked out ride (don't ask me how I know).

After you have the ride height set and everything dialed in, you should be able to lift all four wheels off the ground (unloaded struts) and measure the height of the small helper springs and all should be 30mm.

On the other hand, Unless JIC went away with the "helper spring" then you don't need to worry about it.

Good luck and pm me if you need help.

I found a plate in the front right hand side of the car. It is about 1/2" high and 3" long and says the build date is july 1990. Would this confirm I need the 89-90 package?

My VIN has ...Z96ZMS4... so a MY91 so would this confirm I need the 91-94 package?

I couldn't see the top of the rear strut.

Even the simplest task on this car is hard!

If you remove the air filter you should be able to see the rear towers and determine that it is the later (91+) style as per the pic on the thread.

You can also verify with serial number:

WP0AB2964MS40 1467 and lower = 89-90 rear shocks

WP0AB2964MS40 1468 and higher = 91-94 rear shocks

Thanks guys.

I could just see the left side top of the rear strut and it is type A - Original Version.
My car serial number is S400256.

Does this confirm I need to order the 89-90 version?
