I recently performed this mod on fully developed RSA track car, used a electric pump out of a cup car and a 993 rack. Best mod I ever did. Car is transformed from a truck to a cupcar, especially for autocross! Cost about 3 grand all in with parts and installation but well worth the money. Other good mod was crashbolts on front struts to get 3 degrees of negative camber....no more C-2 Plow!
Best solution
Sounds inexpensive if it's a performance gain as well.

Does the power steering rob horse power from the car like a A/C compressor belt ?

I am a bit of a lurker to rennlist......have not posted any photos yet....will try later this week-end. Here Goes:
The pump is actually out of a cupcar, new it was about 900.00 (I think it is the same pump as a VW Cleo? (ROW part from VW could not find it in the States)
Rack was out of a 993.......direct bolt in replacement (used 200.00)
short hoses from pump to rack (2 footers)50.00
Fabricated a cradle bracket to hold the pump right above the ABS bracket weighs about 2-3#
Labor was 10 hours from local shop Fordahl Motorsports in Seattle
Not sure where they picked power up (fuel pump ckt maybe)

I am as much a purist as the rest of you but an RSA on slicks with a track alignment is a pig to drive in any type of slow corner quick transition........autocross especially! This is a bolt on mod that can be removed if you ever sold the car...... I love it!

Bring the car to me for a few weeks, and I'll swap steering systems .

Would this be an improvement "upgrade" for a power steering car.

1. Weight ?
2. Less stress on the engine due to the deleted cam sprocket

If you track your car with slicks and a proper racing alignment, a 964 without power steering is a pain to drive. Installing power steering transforms the car. I recommend the electric power steering route and as previously mentioned, the install is straight forward.

My car does not have power steering, however, it is 2225 lbs fully wet, and runs the wide body suspension position with 993 GT2 Evo uprights which alters the geometry such that it isn't an issue.

The pump is mounted on newer VW Polo, Lupo, FOX and Audi A2. It can be found on ebay for around 300 Euro. It's a great upgrade and can be dismounted without any signs of ever being mounted. I haven't mounted on my own yet but tested it on other rs-cars.
