"maybe if we could understand exactly what happens when we let the clutch slip ,we would be able to determine if the smell is" normal" or not "
When the clutch slips the surface of the clutch disk being connected to the transmission slips against the surface of the flywheel being connected to the engine.
Ps : never seen a rubber centre on a clutch on my other cars .Any Idea why the P engineers designed it that way ? Cushioning affect to dampen out vibration from the engine to the transmission, and in turn the driver/vehicle.
Is it possible the burning odour you've been attributing to rubber is in fact friction material found in the clutch and brake pads? To verify, you could perform some spirited braking sessions then have your offactory sensors determine if it is the same odour by getting a few good whiffs down by the front rotors.

Does the 964 even have a rubber-centered clutch disk? It doesn't seem like it would be necessary to have both a rubber-centered clutch disk and a rubber-centered dual mass flywheel? Anybody know the answer?

Ah, but the '89 has a solid flywheel. After '89, they had DMFs, whose rubber was probably intended to solve the exact same problem (drivetrain vibration/noise) as the rubber-centered clutch disks in the solid flywheeled cars.
