Default Oil Cooler Fan Mod

I recently had the ballast resistor and temp sensor replaced on my car as the oil coler fan was not switching on. It then worked fine but with one caveat:

I am guessing that the 993 part has been installed rather than the 964 part as I believe the 993 fan kicks in at a slightly higher temperature than the 964 one?? Where before the car always stayed below 9 0'clock even in traffic, the low speed fan now doesn't kick in until almost the 10 o'clock point. Then, as soon as the temp lowers back to the 9 position the fan switches off again. What this means is that in traffic the temp varies between 9 and 10 o'clock positions.

I don't like it this hot so a few days ago I disconected the temp sensor on the fan assembly forcing the fan to run at high speed at all times. It now never gets above the 8 o'clock mark even in heavy trafic which is great. Makes me and the car happier! My question is this: will the fan itself die overly quickly by running all the time? I know it clearly won't last quite as long as it normally would like this but will it still last years or will it be reduced to months? (I know in many of my previous cars I had kenlowe fans running constantly with no issues). By the way, I also intend to plug the temp sensor back in during the winter months.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

why not get the correct part then, and not worry about premature failure?

Well, Hawk911,for one thing I'm not 100% sure there is in fact a difference in the 964 and 93.., does anyone know better. Also, I like the fact theat the car runs so cool now...just want to make sure it won't kill the fan.

I have wondered the same thing. I replaced my ceramic resistor a couple years ago and now my fan does not come on until its above 9 o'clock and shuts off about 9.

If Porsche superseded the part number, I'd guess you'll be fine.

I have a bypass switch installed and run the fan at high speed all summer.

According to a thread on here I read a while back, the current 993 part number (99361652101) for the Ballast resistor superseeded the 964 part. I`ve just had one fitted on my car when replacing the condensor and receiver/drier and havent noticed any problem with it. Incidentially the condensor is also a 993 part number.
