Default CV Boot Prices?

Me again...

So the expensive shop wanted $711 to replace all (4) rear CV boots on my '90 C4. You good people told me that was rediculous and when I checked the parts cost and, compared to what I found on Pelican, are almost 5x the cost!

So I skipped the work with them and bought the CV boots through Pelican.

A local (ish) shop just gave me a quote of $530 with parts and labor. When I told him I had the boots already, he said only $300 labor. Do the math and their parts are also almost 5x what I paid for my boots (about $10 each).

Am I missing something?

What I got at Pelican reads thus:

CV Boot Kit (boot, flange, grease, circlip, and clamps) (4 per car, sold individually), 964 Carrera 2/4 (1989-94), 911 Turbo (1985-94)

I bought (4)

I'm showing a list price of $51.67 on these... Sounds like they were just quoting you list. Pretty standard. GKN Drivetech sets the 'list price', which they then distribute at wholesale prices to dealers. You picked them up at wholesale price.

So I'm ok with what I bought, I just got them wholesale (or less)?

The front and rear boots aren't the same. Pelican has a separate listing for the fronts I believe.

The boots are very expensive through the dealer and that is probably the quote you got. $300 labor for all four sounds pretty good.

Thanks. No my only worry is that my CV joints aren't too worn. Lord only knows how long the PO drove on them.

I *just* did this last night and this morning. It really wasn't difficult, but I sheared a 1/2" drive impact extension!

I thought about it, but I read somebody who did it and said they would have gladly paid to have it done instead. Plus, I want a pair of expert eyes on the CVs themselves. I have a feeling they're worn.

Oh no doubt my wife would prefer to be $500 poorer than have grease tracks all over the house.
