Hi

I am new to the 911 and wanted to ask a few questions from the experienced

1: I went out today for a little run and seem to be getting a little bearing noise from the rear drivers side, could be wheel bearing or low tyre tread noise, anyway I pulled over and noticed the amount of heat radiating from the rear of the cars wheel arches. The temp is fine (oil temp showing 1/3 on the gauge after 20mins drive) but should the rear radiate that much heat? It made the tyres hot to the touch. Never had an air cooled rear engine car before so not sure if its right.

2: RHD i have a switch next to the sunroof switch just tucked under to the side. any idea? The Manual doesn't seem to explain it.

3: I gave it a little throttle today on a dry straight road, just up to about 80-100mph an as I medium to hard braked in a straight line the car wandered a little, not much, but enough to need slight correction from the steering but it was not like brakes pulling in other badly maintained cars. It was like the brakes were working independently and alternate at the rear (obviously not) but thats how it felt, almost like the rear weight mass was behind me try to over take, i know it is, but it was a straight road and in dry conditions so it felt odd to a noob, Afterwards i thought that would be difficult to handle on a curve in the wet.


My car is well maintained by Northway Porsche Indi, recent MOT etc so i assume it doesn't have many major issues. However I just wanted to check because there in nothing like a 911...

1) Normal. I can't say I've ever checked my tyres - but when I bought my 964 one of the first things I asked was "should it throw out this much heat from the rear wings?".

2) Sounds like you're describing the switch to select whether you're controlling the left or right mirror? If you push the left side in, then the control **** on the drivers door controls the left mirror, and vice versa if the right side is pressed in.

3) Car should brake pretty straight - mine does. Only under very hard braking from well over 100mph am I aware of the engine behind me.

the heat from the exchangers is dumped out in the rear wheel arch. Look under there and you can see the flat tube that it is dumped from. It can be VERY hot.

Thanks for the info on the heat if that's correct it must make the pressure rise in the rears a great deal, and i suppose that's why the pressure is so critical

I think I found the mirror switch and its on the side next to the ignition key but not sure, will take a pic and post it up. If it is the one next to the sunroof that operates the mirrors what is the one above the Ignition? I have an owners manual but it shows the left hand drive layout.

Regarding the braking weight, it may have been 100mph as i looked at the speedo when it was braking and showed approx 80mph, odd but it was the 2nd only drive in the car so i will familiarise myself some more before i become concerned.

P.s if it is a wheel bearing is it a big job? It looks like a suspension off

The sunroof switch rocks front to back and is next to the mirror switch which moves (snaps) left to right. Not really visible sitting just above the starter on the underside of the lip. So test the switch to see then if you can then adjust the mirror(s) with the toggle next to your small, triangular window.

About the braking issue - my thoughts go to two things:
1. Engine mounts - you can search this forum (964) for engine mount info. They're NOT a big deal to change (took me :15 minutes). Beware of NOT changing them to race or RS or Wevos as they are much stiffer and you would need some other reinforcements to run these kinds of engine mounts.
2. Suspension. If the rears are shot then you can experience this. With the weight on the rear of the car the rear suspension takes a beating over the life of a rear shock.
3. Condition AND size of the rear tires. If you are running stock 16" 225's then there is considerably less stability IMO.

How many miles on the car and has there been any suspension work done?

Classic Porsche 911 problem . The C4 very much changed all that .

The switch above the ignition is to adjust the clock. It's not a true switch really - only one side pushes in, and springs out again when you let go. If you push it in briefly it will move the clock hands forward a small amount - hold it down and the hands will move round faster. However - with mine, you have to push it in at just the right angle to get it to work.

I think you are right i was thinking of the clock switch, and as you say it just springs back so the other must be for the mirrors.

Its a C4, on the almost compulsory 17's Bridgestone S02a tyres running 36psi (at cold) new front, 3-4mm rear. I think the mounts look new, I will check the hang from them when i get to the engine. Been working my way around the car cleaning. Its a 1992 and it has the plastic inlet manifold change so i assume it wasn't registered 92 yet an 89-90 model kicking around. As i say it wasn't OMG this is dangerous, just something i noticed.

Suspension is probably tired and haven't found anything in the paperwork to change that view yet, but i haven't been through it all but it doesn't leak and has had many bushes and ball joints replaced in the last 12 months.

Perhaps i should also jack it up and rotate a wheel to see what the brakes are doing?
