one puzzling question still :
Fluids always seek their own level
if my understanding of the engine and lube lines is correct ,the oil in the oil tank has to go up before it goes down into the pump
in normal circonstances ,equalization of levels should thus not happen, unless of course there is a siphoning effect
am i Right?
Sorry Sir,.......not in this case. The Oil flows back through the lowest point of the system: the lines that connect the tank to the oil pump inlet and thats at the bottom. This is the line attached to the case kind of under the engine-mounted filter.

if siphoning is indeed the culprit ,would a less- or more -viscous oil help?
Not that I've never seen in 35+ years. A real thin oil (10w-30) accelerates the process but the proper ones (15w-40, 15w-50, 20w-50) do it all the same. Its really dependent on how long the car sits.

Back in my dirt bike days we use to drop a teaspoon of cod liver oil or it may have been castor oil (i.e. not Castrol, but the stuff Mom use to keep in the medicine cabinet) into our gas tanks and it may have created the same fragrance. The kinda smell you find at a dragstrip.
